I've been working on SEO for a project I'm working on because I expect ranking for my target keyword will be a key driver of user acquisition.
My site, as of a couple days ago, ranked #12 for my target keyword. My site is a relatively new domain (<6 months) with a minimal backlink profile at this point.
I discovered that there was a competitor in my niche that shut down their product. This competitor's domain ranked for my target keyword (at #25), it also ranked for a bunch of other relevant keywords, and it is an older domain (>5 years) and has a much more extensive backlink profile.
I decided to buy the competitors domain, and 301 redirect the domain to my site as a way to build the domain authority of my site and pass some of the competitor domain's SEO juice onto me.
I did that, and has immediately led to weird results, all happening within 24 hours. For my target keyword, my site no longer ranks in the top 100. My competitors domain is now in position #12 (it has effectively replaced my domain's spot in the google rankings). This search result still has my site's title and description, but it is strange to have my competitor's domain name (which has a different product name) on the search result.
I am confident the 301 redirect has been set up correctly, both for http and https.
Does anyone have any idea why Google may have done this? Is it still figuring out how to adjust its rankings, and it may fix itself over time? I expected this change to help my SEO, and it's currently 48 hours later and it appears to have done the exact opposite.
