How can I get a website to rank on Google, that gets Social Media traffic despite SEO Challenges?

The title is general but this is actually a very peculiar stuation. My friend’s website has been around since 2013. Back in 2014/15 ish, the site had a different name and actually ranked on the first page on google searches. Since then, they had a name change and had a hard time getting on Google. In recent years, my friend has been able to market it well on social media and actually get followers thousands of followers on social media from posting some of the same content on to there.

Some of the followers check out the full articles and that’s what drives majority of the traffic these days. However, google still refuses to improve the site’s rank and even if you search its name, you always get a “did you mean” type result and not even an option to remain on what you searched for.

Additionally, my friend uses the Search Console (and the Bing equivalent) to submit links from each post onto search engines directly. Their site seems to follow what I know about SEM well enough. I don’t see why it’s not ranking at all.

Important note/theory: I feel it has something to do with the fact that their site is backed by Tumblr. It’s essentially a Google Domains (.com) on a Tumblr blog. Tumblr has search engine issues I believe.

What do you guys think?
