Newbie's First Client. Content/backlinks for a motel website?

Howdy SEO veterans

So a friend and I started a web development company and landed our first client which is a motel that needs work done for a fresh site.

The website design and creation we pretty much have down (Creating websites are pretty damn easy this day and age)

The thing is we wanted to do some SEO work on the website to boost traffic as website creation and SEO work go hand-in-hand, the only problem is we're pretty much complete beginners to the SEO world. I've been doing a bit of reading on the very basics:

- Research keywords --> See what keywords competitors are using and use what works for them as well as find variations/synonyms

- Do up the website so it's SEO friendly --> Title tag / meta descriptions / URL / Image tags & alt tags / load speed of website / good flow with the internal link from home page

I see a lot of posts regarding backlinks and content, having quality content and good quality non-spammy backlinks etc.

I'm a little bit stuck on what is actually meant by having quality content and backlinks in our example... a motel website.

Backlinks to blogs and whatnot I can kinda understand for example... an SEO website, having quality blogs that have quality informative material, and having backlinks in other peoples' blogs/sites that redirect back to your blog (I think that's how it's done?)

So my question is: What is considered quality content and quality backlinks to help boost the websites ranking in this case? (For a motel website)

Is my perception of content/backlinks even correct? o_O

Much confusion, Pls halp.
