Is there any SEO value in a company mention, without a backlink on a high profile site? (i.e. today we got a great mention in The Times, with a large photo)

As the title says...

Our small UK animation studio was fortunate enough to be featured in an article in The Times, on how small businesses have to handle late-payment. In both the printed and the digital editions.

Not only was there a short quote from me, accompanied by our company name, location and what we do. The main photo for the article is of our animation studio and me (Company founder / Creative Director / Cleaner). They'd sent a photographer to our studio on Saturday.

Whilst, it's, of course, nice to be in the papers business section and there may be some potential enquiries as a result.

I wonder if we should expect any SERP improvement. The article does not include a backlink to our site but does feature our company name a few times along with the words 'UK animation '.

It's already being picked up by a Google Alert I had set up for our company name. Plus I've highlighted it on our preferred social media channels and we're going to make a blog article that will link to it too, from our own site.

Is Google smart enough, to see the article we link to, is also about us and so potentially increase our SERP?...
