building links in a boring industry

Hi everyone, I’ve read a tonne of super useful threads over the past hour or so on how to acquire backlinks. I’m still a bit lost though as to how I can build links for a family friend’s website. I work in marketing but don’t have a tonne of experience in SEO.

They really need some business as they’ve been hit hard by COVID-19. I know SEO isn’t an immediate solution (I’ve started Google Ads for that), however they need some help in the long-term as well as their visibility on Google is very poor.

They’ve just had a new site developed and it looks good, is fast and well-structured. They’re kind of just hovering in the 50-100 range now for all the key search terms in their industry.

As far as I can tell, the below are the ethical ways to build backlinks. I’ve added a comment to each. Is there anything I’m missing?

Great content and linkable assets – It’s a super boring industry (debt collection and credit management). Content isn’t really a thing. :/

Guest blogs – As per above. The only blogs are the blogs of competitor debt collection agencies. There’s 1 or 2 potentials, who I’m currently reaching out to.

Checking competitor links – I have SEMRush and checked the major players. I was shocked at the fact all their backlinks appear garbage.

Directories – I’ve no idea if it makes a difference, but I’ve submitted the site to a couple of the less dodgy-looking directories, if there is such a thing. Probably more grey hat lol.

Broken links – I’ve checked key websites (that aren’t competitors) and nothing jumps out as being eligible for me to pitch replacement content for.

Link roundups – I can’t identify any in this industry. Where do I search for those?

HARO/Google alerts – Is it worth joining this? Would it cover Australia?

Associations - Probably the most success here. Pay for a membership and get a link.

Resources pages – Had a little success in this using Backlinko’s Google search suggestions, i.e. “{your keyword}” + inurl:resources.

Thanks a lot! Jamie
