Best SEO tool for a freelance writing business?

Hi /r/SEO,

I run a small freelance writing business focused on providing two service packages to technology clients.

My focus is on B2B technology - which is fairly commonplace - but I also commonly write about a few more specialized subniches including backup and disaster recovery and Linux. There are less tech marketing writers targeting this space and some decent clients out there that need writers — so I reckon that targeting this long tail of KWs is probably my best gambit.

My goal this year is to develop a really strong inbound marketing machine. I'm not in a rush for magic to 'work' instantly, as I have a decent book of business right now; it's more of a medium to long term gambit to trickle leads in to my pipeline, which sounds an awful lot better to me than periodically doing outbound.

I'm planning to focus on organic keyword-based marketing rather than PPC because it seems like a more natural fit for me. I love writing so have an editorial calendar full of ideas for blogs, lead magnets, resources, landing pages, and on-site copy to develop. By contrast, I'm less numerate and the thought of managing campaign budgets makes me head hurt.

Keyword research, however, is relatively new to me (I do some SEO writing for clients but they always provide this for me!). So I'd need to figure out who my top competitors are and what keywords I should be targeting with my writing.

I've checked out Moz, SEMRush and Ahrefs. Unless I'm missing the point of it, I don't think I need much in the way of backlink tracking as I won't be accruing many and know about most manually.

Sorry for the lengthy description! But if anybody know which tool(s) would be strongest in this area and where I might go to up my knowledge than I'd be very appreciative.
