I need some input and advice on whether a job opportunity is worth pursuing.
I applied for a SEO job with a B2B company (very niche), apparently made it past the first round of interview. There was a surprise second round involving an assignment and an in-person presentation.
To begin with, I'm very on the fence about this opportunity, largely due to the industry's niche and the commute time (approximately 1 - 1.5 hours one way). The interview did little to change my mind, and the assignment didn't help either.
The assignment has 2 sections to it: Giving recommendations to improve a page's ranking, as well as suggesting SEM approach (if any), and I have to define challenges, strategy, to a non-SEO savvy manner.
The second section requires me to rank another page in the top 3 position of Google. I will have to provide a detailed strategy, the tools I would use to plan this, and the time needed to get the top 3 position.
I'm very put off by the assignment mainly due to the work involved. For the first part of the assignment (minus the SEM part which I've yet to tackle), I've spent about 4 hours to create about 10 slides, and I'm not even done with it. I forsee with the rest of the parts of the assignment, it might take a few nights to create about 30 slides?
Admittedly, I will say that I've put off doing it till this weekend. The assignemnt was sent to me on Christmas Day itself, and I didn't touch it till yesterday. The procrastination is on me.
Thing is, I'm not sure if it's normal to put in this amount of work, or if an assignment has so many parts to address. The past assignments I was given requires me to do a website audit and provide recommendations, or at a smaller scale that limits the number of slides I am to create (between 10 - 15 slides).
Part of me feel like just giving up the opportunity because of the commute and the work required, especially since my regular work is going to start. On the other hand, part of me feel like continuing just so that I can see if the compensation package will change my mind, and I feel like seeing it through to the end. Another factor is how difficult it is to get an interview - I'm having difficultly getting job interviews.
It would be great to get your take on my situation.
