Sites with two articles ranking on the first page. Is it a good sign that I might outrank them?

In cases where a competitor site is appearing twice, with two different articles, in the SERP first page. let's say positions 1 & 3.

Would you say it's a good sign I might beat him to it with better content? Or the other way around?

Of course, many other factors are to be taken into account. I'm trying to figure out if this specific scenario is a positive sign or a negative sign.
