How to Get Backlinks from HARO (5 Tips)

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share some link building tips here for anyone looking to try out HARO.

You may have heard of HARO before, but if not, It’s a service that connects journalists with sources. You signup as a source, answer queries, and if your answer is selected, you get quoted in the article… and you get a link!

What makes HARO effective

What makes HARO a truly effective link building tactic is that it allows you to get high-quality editorial links that are hard to copy.

If you write a guest post, your competitors can simply write a post for that same site. But, HARO links can’t be copied. At best, they can subscribe to HARO, hope the publication makes another request, and then try their best to get their answer selected.

In addition, HARO is a naturally recurring tactic, so you can use it to get links week after week.

How to use HARO effectively

Lots of SEOs give up on HARO because they’re not getting any links or they’re not getting a good ROI, and that’s why I’m sharing these ideas here. If you follow these 5 tips, you’ll be much more likely to get your links, and you’ll get them in less time.

#1 Create an email template

Every journalist wants to know your name, company, position, and URL of your site. Many also want a link to a headshot (no attachments). To save time, create a template for your email that already has all of this information included. Then you can quickly select it for your HARO replies.

#2 Who you are matters as much as what you say

Journalists want to quote an expert whose credentials match the subject. If you don’t have the right credentials, you’re wasting your time responding. An obvious example would be a nutritionist who knows a lot about cryptocurrency replying to a request on that subject. It doesn’t matter how much you know or how good your response is if your job title doesn’t fit.

On the other hand, if your job title is “Cryptocurrency investment specialist,” then you’re very likely to get a link even if your response isn’t top-notch.

#3 Use filters to skip irrelevant HARO emails

Your expertise is probably in a specific field, and that’s the only topic you’re likely to get quoted for. However, HARO lists are very broad. For instance, the “Business” list includes, well, all types of business inquiries. Furthermore, scanning over 3 HARO emails with 20+ requests every single day is downright draining.

To save yourself a lot of time, create a filter that will delete all emails from the HARO address that don’t contain terms relevant to your niche. For example, if you work in cryptocurrency, you might delete any emails that don’t include terms like “cryptocurrency,” “Bitcoin,” or “BTC.” Then you can skip every email that doesn’t include a relevant request.

#4 Answer ALL of their questions

Sometimes journalists will include a few distinct questions in their request. It’s tempting to choose one to save time, but you’re much more likely to get a link if you answer each question. Provide a 2-3 sentence response for every question they ask.

They are not going to quote your full answer, but rather, they are looking for a brief quote to pull. The more substance you give them, the more likely they are to use something you wrote. Just don’t take this too far and write pages of content or you’ll get ignored.

#5 Don’t skip editing

It’s tempting to rush through your replies because they’re time-sensitive and the link isn’t guaranteed. However, you’re competing with many other sources for each inquiry, so if you want to get links, you need to write one of the best, most quotable responses.

When writing a response, leave it for a few minutes and then come back and edit thoroughly. A tool like Grammarly can also help catch spelling and grammar errors.

Keep building quality links

I hope you guys like these tips and they help you to score some more links for your sites. If you've got any other ideas or tactics that work well for you, let everyone know in the comments.
