I can't wrap my head around keyword research

Hi, can anyone please help me wrap my head around the concept of short tail and long tail keyword in keyword research?

I'm doing keyword research for my future site and I hit a bit of a snag. I'm quite confused as to which keyword to choose. The short tail has high KD, volume, and CPC. On the other hand, my long tail keyword has nothing at all in semrush. No KD, volume, and CPC. Does this mean that Google doesn't like this keyword because no one or close to zero people are searching for it?

How about if there's a bit of data in there for the long tail keyword but it's too low. Say less than 100. Is it still worth it knowing that the short tail is very popular?

I'm sorry if my questions are all over the place. TIA!

Multi step form affect SEO

Hey,

I'm currently working on a software app that allows my users to embed multi step forms on the websites.

I got a question from a customer a couple days ago wondering about SEO and i have to admit i don't know much about it. I told him there is no impact but I want to be sure.

Does embedding forms hinder SEO in any way? are there options that I can include that will improve my customers SEO? Obviously my goal is to help increase their conversion rate but i don't want to hinder their traffic in any way.

Working remotely as an SEO in a different time zone?

Does anyone reading this work remotely as an SEO in a different time zone? Curious to hear some experiences and thoughts.

Of course, employers/clients prefer to have freelancers and employers in the same city/time zone - but curious to hear if anyone has any extreme time zone issues?

I'm GMT+8 and am flirting with jobs in the UK/EU hence the question - this would leave a small-ish window of meeting time where the time zones blend

Most surprising thing you learned about SEO in 2021?

The thing I learned last year about SEO that surprised me was how content still isn't king.

The Google algorithm favors unskilled writing. Those who know how to write will not experience the same success as those who are average writers at best.I find this to be frightening.

Would it would surpise you if this was intentional on behalf of the algorithm's designers? It's a good way to dumb people down and control them. Nothing scares the machine more than a great writer.

I purchased some competitive domain names, should I redirect or landing page?

I'm a wedding photographer/videographer and I have a website with my business name.

I recently acquired some generic domain domains that had lapsed like [countryname]weddingphotographer.com and [cityname]weddingphotographer.com

At the moment I have them on a 301 redirect to my business website.

From an SEO perspective, If I want to make good use of them, am I better off having a landing page on these domains that links (via button) to my brand website? Or am I better off keeping them as a redirect?

My idea for the landing page would be to make it a good looking landing page with some keywords and description that fits the domain name and then link to my brand website.

How do I add Rich snippets for different location pages?

Hi everyone.

I have an SEO question on localization. My business has one location but I wanna rank for different locations in my country.

C-Panel Primary Domain Switch and SEO

Hi there!

When I first set up my website I used a local TLD (.ca) and then later switched to a .io TLD. I didn't really know what I was doing on the c-panel side of things, so I didn't switch the .io domain to be the primary domain (which, for all intents and purposes, it is).

I have a few questions:

  • Are there any benefits to making the .io domain my primary domain?
  • Are there any known SEO impacts to doing this?

Thanks so much for your help!

Looking for feedback wrt rewrite + republish of page to avoid competing on samen keywords

Hi there,

Looking for feedback and confirmation on something. Also I am new to the SEO game and some SEO stuff I am doing for the first time.

We have 2 pages (both blog posts) competing on the same keywords and thus they are both competing for the same traffic. I want to fix this (*)

This tends to get abstract quickly so please consider the following ...

Page A = topic a (considered main article for topic a)

Page B = topic a+b (short article using topic a in title but covers mostly topic b in content)

Page C = topic b++ (a small rewrite of Page B and doubling down on topic b)

I have the following idea and I am looking for feedback or confirmation ...

  1. Make small content changes on page B so the topic and keyword of that page gets tilted to topic b
  2. Remove the competing keyword topic a from the content in page B
  3. Since the competing keyword is also part of the url of page B I will republish the changed article on a new page+url and use a 301 from page B to page C
  4. Submit this newly created page C to GSC
  5. Delete the old page B

Agree with this approach? I am bit hesitant on 4 and 5 because of the authority of page B I want to pass on to page C

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Cheers'

Fabrice

(*) I am also curious how you guys are handling articles competing on the same keywords? Don't you just make it too difficult for Google when you present 3 articles on the same main topic which only have small content nuances which will only show up when someone actually uses such a long and particular query? If you agree, how do you structure a blog where you are bound to write on the same topic multiple times.

should i block slow countries from accessing my website to improve core web vitals?

Hi - my Lab scores for Mobile and Desktop are normally 98-100%. However my Field scores are in the 'Needs Improvement' or 'Poor' categories for FCP and LCP.

I cannot really optimize the site any more and I already use Cloudflare CDN.

There are some countries that are much slower than others like Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, China, Bangladesh. For example 20 second load times compared with 2 seconds in the UK and US where the most valuable traffic comes from.

They also have higher bounce rates and are very unlikely to convert. They also contribute a lot of spam to the site.

With Cloudflare you can simply block traffic from these countries and in theory improve all these metrics which should mean the site ranks higher?

What do you think are the pros and cons of doing this?

thanks for your help :)

Is there a tool to export reddit posts similar to how you can export SERPs?

I've used a lot of browser extensions to get domains, page titles, descritions etc. from SERPs, but I wonder if there's anything similar for reddit?

Nothing indepth, just something that can get the post title, # of upvotes, # of comments, and the post link.

I want to start a blog for my hobby which has a small but fairly active community on reddit. Hopefully I can get topic ideas by exporting posts either from reddit search results or frontpage of subreddits.

Question about 301 redirecting and noindex

I'm managing a microsite (about 100 pages total). Recently, we decided to cut out some subfolders and reorganize file paths. The content on the pages we are keeping is exactly the same, but the sitemaster is using a new Wordpress template for all pages, so they duplicated some pages on the site.

Page A: old page that is currently indexed with Google

Page B: new page with the exact same content as Page A, but is not yet indexed with Google. I want to transfer Page A's SEO value to this new page.

I have settup a 301 redirect from Page A to Page B. I want to transfer all SEO value from Page A to Page B. My question is: should I noindex Page A? Or am I going to lose SEO value for noindexing Page A and I should not noindex the Page A and just let the 301 redirect handle everything (My thinking being to not add a noindex to Page A while SEO value is being transferred to Page B)?

SEO Is A Long Game, Don't Rush The Process

When I began in SEO I didn't see profit till roughly my second year in the industry and even then the margins were so slim because I was trying to focus on making a name for myself and discounted my services. Now the reason I even say this is because I tend to see a lot of people join the industry looking for instant results than dropping out immediately when they don't get the results they expected.

SEO isn't for the faint of heart especially when you're doing the "Google Dance" and your website is moving up and down 20 rankings a week. It's a long-term game and needs to be treated as such I tell my clients they shouldn't even expect serious results till about 6+ months in and by laying this boundary I've created a successful business model that allows me to breathe. So for those of you who are in your first year and struggling or those on the fence about getting started please treat SEO like the business it is and not the slot machine people talk about it like. It's a long term game but if you stay the course and follow the process I promise you'll see results.

What are the indicators of AI created content... my thoughts

AI generated content has been popping up everything. Plus with Google doing so many spam updates, it seems like sites with lower quality content are getting hit in Googles response to stop the flood of low quality, AI generated content.

To me AI generate content has the following qualities

  • Shorter - not thousand of words but hundreds
  • Sounds like robot - obvious duh, but if it just drools on & on & on without any tone change or flare, probably bot or just bad writer
  • Low quality content- If the content just seems like C+ material then it could be AI. NOTE - I have heard (not checked) that a lot of the AI content generators run of off 2019 data.
  • Large amount of low quality content - Tons of low quality content on a site could also be a sign. But again it could also just be bad writers.

These are just some of my thoughts. Anyone else have anything to add????? Any thoughts are appreciated.

Does Post Content width have an impact on SEO?

I believe this has to do with UX and I'm curious how it impacts SEO.

Recently, I've noticed several content/blog sites (e.g. Forbes) changing the layout of their blog posts to only cover the middle third (⅓) of the grid on desktops.

While much easier to read, does this practice have any significant impact compared to the more conventional layout? (about ⅔ width) and should we do it for our company blogs?

Domain migration and subdomain

Hey everyone, I am hoping to get some light on a specific migration thing.

We recently rebranded and migrated abc.xx to xyz.xx following best practices.

But almost a year has past and in the search console we still see the status as “This site is currently moving to xyz.xx”.

Here’s the thing.

We migrated almost everything except two subdomains that we use for staging. The whole migration was mostly successful apart for losing some positions in search where we used to have top positions but fortunately sales didn’t go down.

Could that be an issue to Google and not help/mess up with the migration in general or since it’s a subdomain it shouldn’t be an issue?

Hope my question is clear and any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks

Expired domains bieng 301 redirected to new domain

Recently I have been noticing websites pop up for keywords I am ranking for, these domains are new domains that have been 301 redirected from an old expired domain. They are killing the Serps with over crazy monthly visits for a site under 1 year old.

One competitor i have been tracking for over a year used an expired domain to create hundreds of affiliate and information pages and shot up to 200k monthly views in a short period of time. This website got hit with the last update and was reduced to around 40k monthly organic visits. However, they purchased a brand new domain and 301 redirected every page to a new page on the new domain. Couple of weeks later the new domain shot up to 450k monthly visit.

It's getting really hard competing fairly in this field and these people are able to make hundreds of thousands in a short period of time.

Has anyone else been noticing this trend? I thought 301 redirects where dead, apperently not.

Can Anyone Help Explain The Discrepancies Between Search Console Page Performance Report & Query Performance Report?

In one of the websites I'm tracking I am seeing very strange discrepancies between the Page Performance Data and the Query Performance Data.

For example, in the page tab, it says that one specific page has received 100 clicks in the past 3 months. When I click on the page itself to filter and switch to the queries tab the "Totals" data at the top still lines up and says 100 clicks, however when I look at each individual query, there are only about 20 clicks associated with the various queries.

It also looks like the total impression count at the top of the page and the actual impression count when totaling up the queries are different with the queries sum being about 2000 impressions shy of the reported total.

I'm not sure if this is just a delay in reporting, some sort of data that is missing or not shared similar to certain data in Google Analytics, or if I'm just misinterpreting something in these reports?

If anyone has any insight it would be appreciated.

How often do you guys do On-Page updates & tweaks?

Just curious (and looking to compare notes a little) - how often do you guys do on-page updates and/or tweaks? Every month? Quarter? Year? As needed?

Also - what tools and guidelines do you use to decide which pages you plan to tweak? AKA, if you had a 100 page site, what criteria would you use to determine which pages to tweak?

An agency that works on one of the sites I manage sends quarterly updates in a spreadsheet - every 3 months we get a list of maybe 20-30 pages on our site with little changes to H1's, H2's, paragraphs, etc.

Just curious if this is an industry practice, or if it's per project, or if it's just that specific agency's way of doing things.

Thanks!

I can target these websites with Google Display Ads campaign with CPC as they are in Google Display Network.

Technical implementation delayed at client end

I am working with an SEO agency and one of the major challenges I face that is causing a performance roadblock is client dependency. Our agency being a marketing first agency doesn't have a strong technical department and most of our dependency is on the client when it comes to making any optimizations on-page and technical.

We create good recommendations and solutions for the client to understand and build very helpful documents, but the clients either don't agree with making the basic changes or take a lot of convincing to make the implementations. Even after that things get delayed and we lag in terms of showcasing any performance.

Why do new articles have a big amount of impressions in google searches the first couple of days and then the amount drops a lot?

I'm finding this pattern on most of the articles I post on my website that the page gets a lot of impressions on the first days and then it drops of drastically.

Is this normal? Can someone explain the reason?

My guess is that this is google giving your page a quick boost to see if it attracts clicks, if it doesn't attract enough it drops it back down in the rankings.

Maybe someone with more experience can explain why this is happening.

What should the changefreq in sitemap be set at?

Hello,

What do you think should be the change frequency of the content pages on the Sitemap?

In my sitemap it is entered like this:

<changefreq>daily</changefreq>

<priority>0.5</priority>

that is, the page edit frequency appears daily. whereas most of the pages are edited maybe annually or monthly (content pages). I don't even remember why I set it that way, it's been a while.

Would you recommend keeping it that way or should I change it to something longer?

Can it affect the Google crawl budget?

Does automatic post grids on blog post pages affect SEO

I have a post grid on my blog post pages that display random posts for the visitors visiting my posts, similar to "latest posts" many blogs show at the bottom of a blog post. Do these affect my SEO when they automatically change all the time?

Backlink managing/tracking

Hi all. Wondering what information is important to track or reconcile.

This is my process so far. I’d appreciate if someone would tell me if I’m wasting my time or if I should be doing more.

Basically I just acquire the link Confirm when I see it in semrush Confirm when I see it in GSC

Anything else?

Is A <-> B links worth it?

It would be better to trade:

A -> B

C <- D

But if that's not an option, is it worth to use A <-> B links or doesn't they give your site much value?

Is it a good idea to create a page about a product that has not gotten released yet? e.g. Iphone 14

I have my own Automotive parts shop and there are cars that are about to be released within a few weeks. Is it smart that I create a page for the car parts that I will be offering for the cars already? Would I grant myself an advantage over the competitors? Would google rank that particular page higher?

Since I won't have the automotive parts for the to-be-released cars yet, would it be any disadvantageous since the bounce rate would be logically higher? People visiting the page will most likely leave it immediately once noticing that the product they searched for is not available on the page they clicked at.

A competitor has only one Do Follow backlink worth about 60. I have 4 DF backlinks lined up worth 90 each. How long will the rankings take?

I am new to the SEO world and wanted to see if I had a competitor in the carpet cleaning industry ranking high with just one .edu backlink worth about 60 points, what chance do I have to out rank them using 4 or more 90+ DF links?

How long will it take?

Is it better to get them all at once or over time?

Any tips or advice?
