7 Day Trial of SEMrush - What should I do?

I have a 7 day trial of SEMrush (the highest plan, whatever that is) because I'm in the process of refreshing my website because my business model is changing to subscription-only.

I have little to no knowledge of SEO strategies. I know enough to understand I should ideally go through and at least make a few keywords to use in articles (I own a financial news website) as well as do a very basic and quick audit of my permanent pages (about me, services and membership pages).

I got SEMrush because I want to know how I should be referring to certain terms in my industry- for example do I use stock market, stockmarket, stock-market or share market or stock exchange or financial markets etc.

I am pretty cynical when it comes to SEO and for a long time I've focussed on writing articles for people before anything else as I believe if I gain a reputation for writing great content- that will bring in my subscriptions.

I'm almost ready to make a strategic decision to avoid SEO completely and instead put the time, money and knowledge into simply creating great content and using effecting PPC advertising.

But I have this free trial and a part of me wants to see just how high I can rank on Google for the hell of it. Like trading stocks, those graphs and charts can become pretty addictive and it is easy to loose the plot.

I'm already doubting myself a few minutes into it, for example, I've changed:

News.Broker is a premium source of fundamental analysis for retail traders seeking the news that moves the financial markets....

To

News.Broker provides real time stock market news used by institutional traders to enable profitable investing decisions...

The first sentence doesn't rank but describes my website and business much better and in a more professional tone than the second which does rank but sounds like a computer has written it.

Am I allowed to just ignore SEO completely and focus all my attention and resources instead on providing premium news that nobody else offers? Surely this is a better and more unique business strategy than writing articles according to the same tool that everybody else uses.

How am I suppose to realistically compete with the budgets of Reuters, Bloomberg and CNBC when it just me and around $10k to create a new website???

I know I've rambled a bit here, but hopefully it gives you an insight into my current situation. Any advice would be sincerely appreciated.
