If I do this, will I shoot myself in the foot?

Hello,

So I am a small business owner and have been handling our SEO effort myself for the past 5 months. I have made some small progress, but really haven't acquired many backlinks. I am in a situation where I feel as though I have to change the name of the company, and the name of the website as a result.

My question is, how badly will this damage the minimal progress I have made thus far? I have heard that it can take time for google to recognize a new website and view it as credible and qualified for ranking, so my worry is that by changing the domain, google will see the website as brand new and it will tank months before I can be qualified to rank again.

Is it possible to keep my current website, but swap it over to a new domain name without google thinking it is a brand new website? What are some problems associated with changing website names that I may not be aware of?

Thanks in advance.
