A customer of mine hired a local company he was suggested by a friend to re-develop his website and do his SEO, both on-site as well as off-site. They will charge him a hefty amount for the development, including another $500 monthly for an on-going SEO (and another $400 to run his adwords and fb ad campaigns). He sells like 5 products currently ffs and hopes to add another 10 to 20 within a year. Apparently a big part of their technique is owning 1000 sites that they post articles on (I assume) and create backlinks. Now keep in mind, these are not legit sites but made for SEO sites. This sounds extremely black-hat to me, not to mention that Google is surely smarter than that and it should become rather obvious to the algo what is what pretty soon, if not already. Surely this is not the way to go about your SEO if you're a serious company looking to build your brand and sell your own products? He is not a chinese sourced dropshipper looking for a quick buck and then burn it to the ground...
Am I right or am I right? I want to tell him to stay the fuck away from them, but I don't want to give bad advice in case I'm still stuck in 2012.
