What year did Google make it hard to rank and started picking and choosing which sites get top positions in search?

I remember when I first started my wordpress website to cover sports, my website never needed any backlinks I was already getting top spots meaning first page for long tail or other keywords this was back in 2007 and around 2012 is when I started losing ranking.
