Updating Outdated Google My Business Listings

Howdy smart internet people,

I have a quick question about GMB listings. I am an Allstate Insurance Agent that is looking to optimize my google business listing. I have been doing some competitor analysis of how other local insurance agencies run their GMB. While doing so I noticed a few Allstate Agents owners who have went under or sold off their book of business but their GMB is still active. When I click visit website it just redirects to a large Allsate directory for all fifty states instead of the state and agent the user would be actively trying to reach. Would it be unethical to suggest to google to replace their website with my agency website and phone number?

All in all the user is trying to reach a local allstate agent and our marketing dept isn't doing a good job of clearing out the old business listings?

Is this something businesses tend to do? Or is what I am considering doing wrong?

Thanks!

Happy New Year!!

URL Parameters Question

Hi All,

I'm trying to block URLs with parameters from being crawled to avoid wasting crawl budget/avoid duplication. It's becoming a bigger task than I expected with a ton of strange parameters. Does anyone have experience about how to best deal with them? I'm thinking of placing canonicals on parameter pages to the main page, then blocking them in the robots.txt file. Recently I discovered the URL parameter tool in search console and am curious about using that to block parameter URLs as it seems the easiest solution. Any info on which is better?

Also, is there a way to find specific URLs google crawls everyday? I know there is the "Crawl Stats" feature in search console as well but I'd like to get an idea of how many parameter URLs are being crawled vs other, more important pages.

German Agencies?

Hey fellow SEO denizens. Anyone here able to recommend a strong German based agency? Looking for a local to help a subsidiary with some projects there which our current vendors aren't really set up for.

Keyword within keywords? What counts?

This seems like a basic question but I can’t seem to find an answer to it. I’m doing some keyword research and say for example I want to write an article on a “Fibonacci sequence calculator”.

One keyword tool I’m using says that the “Fibonacci sequence calculator” keyword has a search volume of 480 and a ranking difficulty of 14. While the keyword “Fibonacci sequence” keyword, dropping “calculator”, has a volume of 135,000 and a difficulty of 48.

If I were to target the full “Fibonacci sequence calculator” keyword in my title or H1, would it hurt my chances for ranking for the higher volume “Fibonacci sequence” or since its nested within the larger keyword can it rank for both? Or is it a one or the other type deal?

Does it make a difference if the added word doesn’t change the meaning at all, such as “The Fibonacci Sequence” vs. just “Fibonacci sequence” which again are shown as different keywords.

Pros and Cons of Rebranding to a New Domain

Hey fellow SEOs,

I could use some input on a side project I've been working on. A few years back, I purchased a throw-away domain for a project I was working on for my day job. I picked the domain named based upon the fact that it was generic enough that if I wanted to use it to test out some front end web dev assets (I work in tech) or do some blogging, it'd work for it.

Two years later, I certainly have done some blogging. I've published approximately three articles a week for the last two years, contracted with some freelance writers to publish their content, and even launched an essay contest with a cash prize for my readers.

As someone who works in frontend web dev and content marketing, my website's technical SEO is pretty solid and my content follows a cluster-based approach that has paid off well in terms of growing my organic traffic by about 940% in 2019.

At this point though, I'm concerned that the domain name not being specific to the niche in which I'm writing is holding me back. Had I had this "no duh" moment a year ago, I would have just purchased a new domain and moved all of my content over to its new home. But, because of the growth that my website has had, moving domains now would risk breaking backlinks (I'd set up flexible 301s if I did change domains, but I've seen enough broken links to know that sometimes things get missed), and I'm not sure whether link equity would transfer to the new domain in a 1:1 relationship with the appropriate 301s/ updated canonicals, or if I would risk having to rebuild my search engine rankings from scratch on the new domain.

I'm curious if anybody has done something similar or if you have any thoughts on the potential risk and reward of rebranding with an entirely new domain.

Edit: I also realize that I forgot to mention that all of my social profiles (hey, reddit username) reflect my current domain since that's how I've built up my branding so far. An updated domain will necessitate updating all of my accounts and oooof.... social has to be my least favorite element of digital marketing.

What is a spam score and how to reduce a spam score from the website?

In today's time, there are many bloggers which what is Spam Score, how to check out blog’s Spam Score and how to overcome the site’s Spam Score, trying to find answers to all these questions but very little People understand about this because it is completely related to blog SEO and it is also very important to know better at the time, otherwise you may have to face major damage to your site in the future.

There are very few bloggers in today’s time who pay attention to this.

What is the Spam Score?

Basically, Spam Score has been developed by SEO data and software company Moz to measure website quality. It tells the Spammy score of any site according to the points of spam flags, which live between 0 to 17. If Spam Score is 17 of any site, then it points to the point that Google has blacklisted the domain, now it will never be seen in the search results.

Suppose if Spam Score of a site is 1,2,3 or 4, then there is no harm to it, But yes, you must take care of this thing further that it can be dangerous for your website in the coming times.

Because if a blog gets a Spam Score of 5 or 6 then the webmaster should agree that one thing is a warning from Google.

If a blog’s Spam Score is 7, 8 or more, then he should change his domain and should think deeply about the mistakes that were earlier not repeated, and in their SEO strategy Should make excessive changes.

If seen, the blog’s Spam Score is up to 4 and there is no problem in Google search and nor does Google take any harmful action for that domain, but if more than that it is called spammy domain, which in no way can not perform in Google search, the domain is also blacklisted by Google when more scores are done.

How to check the site’s Spam Score?

If you want to check your site’s Spam Score so this is a very easy process and you don’t need to spend any money in it because you have a free tool Moz open site for Spam Score checker.

When you use this online tool, you will need to just analyze by entering the blog or website URL, shortly after your blog or website reports will be in front of your eyes.

Not only this but with the Moz site explorer you will also be able to see reports about your blog’s DA PA score and inbound links.

By the way, if you want, you can use the Moz toolbar instead of using the spam score checker tool to check all these reports. This is a Moz chrome extension that you can install in your Chrome browser for free. It does not have to spend any money on this.

By the way, most blogger Mozbar chrome installs in the browser because it makes the link of any blog or website’s DA PA and spam flags easy to find, and the high-quality site is quickly detected.

How to reduce the site’s Spam Score?

The major reason for any site’s rise in this score is spammy links. If there are extreme low-quality backlinks on a site or the spam merit of links is high, then the Spam Score is also raised on that site.

This means we should wholly avoid making links for our site which are broke in quality. Some people make more links in a single day, it is also very wrong to do this because spam rates also boost in this way.

If we want to reduce the spam score of our blog, then we need to find those low quality and spammy links that are linked to your site and should be disavowed by making a list of such links.

When you remove such bad links from your blog, Moz algorithm will scan the blog again once again, the new link will reduce the spam score according to the quality, and this is possible only when you are completely The lower quality links will have been removed from your domain.

What causes Spam Score?

In addition, Moz algorithm uses the following factor to provide the blog’s spam score -

Low Moz trust or Moz rank:

The Moz Rank and Moz trust low of any blog only happen when there is an excessive amount of incoming links and excessive low-quality links, meaning there are no such trustworthy backlinks on the blog, the biggest reason for the increase in spam score is.

Site Link Diversity Low:

A blog that has very few links or can even say that a blog has backlinks from very few websites or the number of referring domains is very low, it is called the low site link Diversity.

If the link diversity of a site is low then its spam score is also increased. So if we want to reduce the score then we will also need to increase the number of referring domain links to our blog.

Large site with Few Links:

If a blog or website is 2–3 years old and has 400–500 articles then it is called a big site. Now if there are very few backlinks on such a website then spam rate is also increased because Moz algorithm and search engine bots links check the profile and see that according to the website age, its content has not been linked by any other websites, so it seems that there is no good content on this site.

High Anchor Text Ratio:

While creating backlinks for your blog, you should take special care of anchor text because I have noticed that if you get more links with the name of your blog, which are called branded links, they badly damage the SEO ranking.

Therefore, we should make branded links very little and if it is not made it is best because they affect the anchor text ratio.

Due to the formation of such excessive links, the spam score is increased. To avoid this, 1% -10% should create backlinks for anchor text only.

Do-follow and No-follow links Proportion:

The backlink proportion of any site also impact a great extent, so if we want to degrade the spam score, when making links, so it should be noted that creating backlinks according to the proportion of 50% Dofollow and 50% Nofollow links. Otherwise, the spam score raises if the ratio down.

A large number of External Links:

If external links are added to a blog, its chances of increasing the spam score are increased.

Therefore, while writing a post, it is important to note that if you have a 1000 words post, then you should add only one external link and that should also be linked to an authority website whose spam score is 0 or less than 4.

Thin Content:

Google algorithms always scan sites with such poor content and keep giving them penalties.

A blog or website on which information is shared in very few words takes them as google spam because such content is called low-quality content, due to the thin content of such a blog spam score is high.

Anchor Text Heavy Page:

If a lot of external website links are used on many blog posts in the anchor text, then it is in the category of Anchor Text Heavy Page, which causes spam score to increase.

In order to avoid this problem, the post should not always add too many anchor text or close links to another website.

No Contact Information:

Google does not always like these sites and treats them as spam which doesn’t have contact information such as owner email, social media profile, etc. The same thing goes on Moz merging, so the spam score of such sites is elevated.

Site Mark-up is Abnormally Small:

Such blogs, which have more HTML than text, have a higher JavaScript score, such a site also gets more spam score.

Domain Name Contains Numerals:

For blogs whose numbers like 123, 42 are added, they are flagged separately for the Moz spam score.

Such domains that contain numbers such as blogging51 etc are provided by a spam flag by Moz because they are not counted in the category of trustworthy domains.

TLD Correlated with Spam Domains:

Websites that are created on a subdomain such as mywebsite.site.com, have their spam score high because Google treats such subdomain as low quality and correlated TLD.

So whenever you want to create a site, you should only build on the top-level domain.

Low Number of Internal Links:

Blogs that have poor linking in posts are also spam flagged. Therefore, to prevent spam score from moving, strong linking is important in every single post.

Site Mark-up is Abnormally Small:

Such blogs, which have more HTML than text, have a higher JavaScript score, such a site also gets more spam score.

Domain Name Length:

Websites that have a very high domain length also come in under spam. We should choose only domain whose length is slight and the user is easily remembered.

External Links in Navigation:

Websites whose menu, footer or sidebar are very much linked to external website links, then such a site’s spam score is high.

Therefore, too many links to any other website should not be added anywhere in the stated part of your website.

So these were some of the factors that caused the website’s spam score to grow, which I have tried to tell you a little bit about. If you blogging by keeping the things mentioned above, blog score can decrease.

Spam Score expose, we hope

Is local SEO more important than SEO?

You've probably heard of local SEO as one of the most important aspects of digital marketing.

However, we believe it is fair that before we recognize and agree with popular opinion, we need to have a concise concept of exactly what local SEO is, its relevance in today's world and how it affects companies.

This article dissects this information for you, so you can get a clear idea of why local SEO dominates internet marketing and how it can help you grow your business.

Every small or big company can grow its business and use local SEO strategies to attract more customers. here I'll discuss what local search optimization is, and why using a local SEO company can help improve your online visibility.

What is Local SEO?

Local SEO is a branch of SEO that focuses on optimizing sites found in local search results.

Basically, local SEO is a strategic process that emphasizes the optimization efforts of local entities.

Local SEO is very important, especially if you have a physical store or a business that provides services somewhere.

According to a study by Forbes, 95% of smartphone users use their device for local searches, of which 61% are business calls and 59% visit.

and Search Engine Watch found that 70% of mobile users click to call a business directly from google search results using their mobile phones.

How Does Local SEO Impact Your Business?

If you own a small business, optimizing your business's local SEO can be very beneficial. Let's look at some of the benefits of local SEO:

  • Local SEO helps potential customers discover your business. A lot of local searches come from non-local searches, which are looking for a business like yours, and complete with right local SEO, your business can capture the audience.
  • Local SEO provides potential customers with the information that they want when they want it. for example, if your restaurant has free wifi or is pet-friendly, displaying that information as part of your local SEO will attract customers who are looking for just that.
  • even if your business does not have a website, local SEO helps your business stand out in local searches and helps drive more traffic through online leads.
  • Local SEO helps drive people’s decisions in favor of their business. the more data they have about your business, the more trustworthy you are in their eyes. this lays a strong foundation upon which you can build a mutually beneficial customer relationship.

It's time to change strategy by getting ahead of Google's changes. This is your best chance to improve your SEO and surpass your competitors.

What do you do when you want to find something on the internet? Your search for it, right? And then you click on one of the top links on the first page of the search results. In fact, more than 90% of visitors will do that same exact thing. How did those web pages get there? It’s because they were search engine optimized.

WHY SEO IS IMPORTANT

Because SEO acts like your identification card. Search Engine crawlers cannot understand your content like humans do. So, you must feed the robot with certain information to help it process your website better. When I type in “trip to San Francisco”, it scans every page for an exact match and presents those documents that have this phrase as a keyword in them. If you have the best piece on the net but do not tell the crawlers that it is about San Francisco, the bot may take ages to find you

Now that you know how local SEO can help your business, you can better manage your online presence and build your customer base. Adding a local SEO company to your marketing team will not only improve your local SEO but also increase your website and your competitor's organic search engine ranking.

I worked as a graphics designer, learned web development but never did it professionally past a couple of projects for practising, wrote content as well for a company I once worked at(wasn't good at it). I wanted to get another skill under my belt, thought of trying out SEO. So now I am teaching myself SEO. It's interesting however I am clueless as to where can I practice it.

I have thought about about making a site regarding e-commerce and optimize it. I am sure no one would want to give a newbie their space as a playground to practise.

Please suggest where shall I go from here. Where can I practise? I can't take up internship at the moment due to my circumstances. Thanks in advance :)

Bought the .com version of .net domain already ranking, should I redirect?

I thought I would get some opinions about this because I'm a little undecided.

Recently I was able to acquire the .com version of my .net domain through an expired domain auction.

My .net domain is ranking very well for a lot of hard to rank keywords, I also have established some pretty good backlinks for it.

I know that doing a 301 redirect could make me lose some of my rankings as the backlinks wouldn't carry the same weight, also the new domain could end up sandboxed because it had expired recently.

What would you do?

Go ahead and do a 301 redirect to the new domain.

Put same content on the .com and do a canonical to the .net version. (I may be wrong but I think that canonical link element only works on the same domain).

Sit on the .com and do nothing with it.

Create an entirely new site that would compete with the .net version for the same keywords.

Please post your opinions.

Question about internal linking

Say that I have X posts that I want to rank most on my blog, and I have put all those in a "featured posts" sidebar, which basically appears in every page of my site.

In terms of internal linking structure... Does this mean that I am passing maximum link juice to all those posts? Or does linking them within the blog articles also make it count?

I always use also in-content links, mainly because it seems natural, but I was wondering if in terms of SEO this would be overkill and since I already got all of them interlinked on my featured sidebar, wouldn't really make a difference.

PageSpeed Insights

So I changed the content of my website to create a better landing page and I now have a slideshow with content on my homepage. The site was built with Wix over the summer (I know don't say it) and before I knew it was a mistake I sunk $600 into it already. Any who PageSpeed Insights gave me a 21 score on mobile and obviously I fixed what I could and got it to a 28 which is still bad. Out of curiosity I ran the test on top SEO companies in the area and there scores were just as bad. The one that claims #1 was at a zero. Everywhere else my site is in the green and this concerns me with google going mobile first for crawling. I have a client with a bare bones boring website and it is a 76. Background is green and there is a slideshow with a transparent background and white clip art. Help: 3700 URL Website: A category linked in my header's nav is only showing as having 8 internal links

We have a seen a page on our website's search rank tank in the last four months and when troubleshooting with both Screaming Frog and SEMRush, we are seeing this:

~3700 crawlable URL's on our website

Nearly every page on our website has ~700-1500 internal links

The page in question has 8 internal links

This issue has been corroborated by both SEMRush and Screaming Frog. Here is what we've checked to troubleshoot:

  • Checked Robots.txt to ensure nothing was blocking bots from the page

  • Compared what Google's Crawler sees between a working page and between the dysfunctional page and saw no difference.

  • Looked into the canonical URL's and found they are set up correctly.

On the server-side we are limited with what we can look into. We are on a SaaS eCommerce platform and we have a WWW to no WWW redirect and HTTP to HTTPS redirect in place but we have limited control other than that.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what we can look into?

Hello All!

I recently fixed some issues with my site not indexing properly. what a weird ordeal that was... However I have spent some time working on SEO and such over the last couple of weeks to help improve the site (I'm using yoast) and would like some feedback on how i have done so far. Also if any suggestions on what areas I will need to improve on and what would be the best way to go about doing that.

Ive ran speed tests on different sites and on gtmetrix and am getting an 85% (javascript is the big issue, but cant figure that one out) but would like to improve the SEO on the site at this time.

Much appreciated!

-Scott

Google Search ranking comparison between generic TLDs and alternative TLDs

Hi, I'm wondering if there is such comparison for SEO purpose. Do you think a domain like blueschool.com will have the same ranking as blue.school? any idea if it will be less or better rank?

How identical can your text content be inbetween subpages on a website?

I'm currently trying to rank for a service in many different smaller areas where I currently operate, which is why I'm creating subpages that is specific to each of these areas and also tied with the service i'm offering.

The 2 competitors that is doing the same are all basically just copypasting the subpages with the exception of swapping out the H1s and switching out the specified areas in their paragraphs. They also have very limited paragraph content with only around 150-200 words per page whereas I'm aiming for around 500.

So how unique should I be making all my different subpages? Can I straight up copypaste it like the competitors, should I be writing a new 500 page text for each subpage or something inbetween? What's your experience?

Looking to move from Rankmath to SEO framework

Had a little play and switching improves my page speed significantly.

Tried deactivating RM and activating SEO framework, meta descriptions are missing 200+ pages and 100 posts.

Tried SEO data transfer plugin...not compatible with RM.

Any ideas or suggestions?

How to track keyword positions without getting overwhelmed with too many keywords?

I'm doing SEO for a SaaS. We're focusing mainly on a couple of product pages and 20-30 blog posts that perform best. I use Semrush to track the positions of the keywords each page is trying to rank for. The problem is, each page of those pages is usually ranking for multiple keywords – 1-3 main keywords, but I'm also tracking long-tail keywords, synonyms and other related keywords that are getting decent traffic that I discover from Google Search Console. I'm also tracking some highly competitive keywords that we're currently not ranking for yet, but that are important to monitor competitors.

As a result, each page can be ranking for even 20 keywords on Semrush and my position tracking report can be confusing and overwhelming.

Did anyone here have a similar problem and found a good solution?

Is embedding content on my website worse for SEO?

Hey, so I sometime use this spreadsheet service for embedding tables of information.

But would it better for SEO if I just write the information right in my blog's page?

Because if I am essentially embedding another website inside my blog I guess that's not a good idea?

How do I approach a company, that sells a single software product which solely occupies an extremely niche market but has virtually zero internet presence outside of its own site, for affiliate marketing purposes.

Basically there's is a software product I use that has a small, but fiercely active community. I know it inside out, and over the years have found extremely creative and non-documented uses for it. I have very sporadically written and posted about them over the years, and everytime I do the feedback as been fantastic.

The company's userbase is aging out, and there are maybe 15 videos (non-company produced videos) about the product on Youtube (which are painfully archaic). There are ZERO dedicated blogs outside the company's own forums--which are populated day and night by dozens of loyal, but dwindling, users. When I search for the product's name in various forums people will be like "What, I used it in 2005...are they still around"!?

I ran some searches on Ubersuggest, and noted that the main related keywords are searched 30,000 times a month. A Youtube video that was the top result-with only one keyword of separation between them-had 90 million views.

As someone who spends time in both markets (the 90 million YT video one and this company) I have determined exactly how to--eventually--bridge the two and drive TONS of users to the site with a combination of YT tutorials, blog posts, etc.

FWIW, the product has several tier versions from approx 200 to 700 USD and there are annual updates which are about 100 USD and a bunch of new features that most folks in the forums either don't understand or can't figure out how to use properly. It should be noted that a lot of people stopped buying updates (and are vocal about it in the forum) because of this lack of "bridge." The bridge, BTW, is not a line of code or a marketing technique, it is a series of conceptual and workflow based concepts that could potentially be the subject of many, many videos as the topic itself is timeless.

Anyway, I'm a bit desperate to somehow figure out how to make money off of this. My decent-paying white-collar job of nearly a decade was eliminated when it was outsourced overseas, and I have a family and bills to pay.

I'm not looking for "SEVEN FIGURES A MONTH IN PASSIVE INCOME!!!!" I know it will be a long and arduous process, and I'm willing to work as hard as necessary learning the video production and editing gear and software that it takes to produce engaging content.

I have some severance (not much, but it's something...), and would be more than happy to pay well for whatever services I need to get up and running. I've been lurking this sub for a while now (as well as r/bigseo, r/PPC, and similar), and a lot of folks here know their shit, work hard, and don't deserve any of that crap I see ppl ranting about in r/freelance, r/Upwork etc).

I've been watching YT tutorials, even paid for some online courses that I'm actually doing, and there are so many concepts and ideas to grasp that I'm not sure what to focus on. :-(

Do I need to learn Wordpress? SEO analytics? Affiliate Marketing? PPC? And if I wanted to hire someone to consult with regarding the idea I have described above, what do I search for? Am I looking for a Web Developer? An SEO expert? A digital marketing expert?

From what I can understand, the userbase and niche is simply not big enough, or sufficiently wide in scope, to make any money off it through "traditional" monetization methods, and reckon the only way I could profit from this is if the company pays me for each click I drive to their site. However, I'm 99.9 percent certain they have zero PPC/google ad/or affiliate marketing structure.

I hope this all made sense, and thank ya'll for reading...any help here would be very, very, much appreciated!

Top 4 Paid Advertising Trends in 2020 You Must be Aware of

The year 2019 has brought a lot of revolutionary changes in the digital marketing industry and paid advertising is not an exception. There are many new channels, tools, platforms, technological inventions that have brought revolutionary changes to the paid advertising industry. Due to all these factors, all experts and agencies are forced to redefine their digital marketing strategy to stay in the game. In this article, I will share the top 3 paid advertising trends 2020 that you must know to redefine your strategy. The change in strategy by keeping these top trends in mind will help you in the quest of leveraging better ROI and conversions.

1. Video Advertising will be Vital

Video content brings many benefits for businesses such as boosted brand reach, increased rapport with customers, and increased reach to engage with more targeted audiences. Thus, video content has become an inseparable part of digital marketing strategy in the past few years and the Year 2020 will repeat history. With time, video making has become easier with video editing tools, which has made it easier to use videos in marketing. It means video advertising will be one of the dominating factors in paid advertising in 2020.

2. Voice Search will Redefine Paid Marketing

Voice assistants and voice search are gaining popularity rapidly. According to one of the statistics, in 2020, more than 50% of search queries will be voice-based. Thus, it will be one of the paid advertising trends 2020. The PPC advertising companies and experts will need to devise its digital marketing strategy in a way that it can rank higher so its result can be used in the voice search. One of the things that can be done by advertisers is to use long-tail keywords that can include the phrases one would use in a conversation. For example, instead of targeting the “Christmas Gifts” keyword, one need to target long-tail keywords such as “What is the best gift idea for my girlfriend” or similar to that.

3. More Options and Emphasis on Audience Targeting

Generally, companies focus on keyword targeting, but one of the top paid advertising trends will be advanced audience targeting. There will be more specific tools that will allow advertisers to segment audiences at a granular level to focus on a highly specific target audience that is more likely to convert. Hi everyone, I'm a UCF graduate and I've been lurking this subreddit for a while now, and I felt I should give back to the community for all the great info I've learned from here.

I have done an internship at a marketing agency where my daily task was to write high quality articles that would rank for certain keywords.

The agency was very pleased with how fast my TAT was(I can type 155 wpm) and that my articles were extremely well written.

Anyway, I am giving 1 free 500 word article to everyone who PMs me.

All 4 of the listings for a niche business in a town are at fake addresses, but Google won't do anything about it.

I'm trying to expand my father-in-laws business to the next town over. All 4 of his competition in that area is listed as a store-front business, but none of them have actual real locations that qualify as a store-front business according to Google's TOS.

  • 2 of the businesses are listed at hotels.
  • 1 is listed in the middle of town, randomly.
  • 1 is listed at his house.

My goal is to get them correctly listed as service area businesses, so that I can compete with them on equal terms as a service area business as well. I've been trying for months to report the listings with my level 7 Local Guide Account, but either the suggested changes are immediately ignored, or they eventually fail. I requested Google contact me, they instructed me to fill out the business redressal form, which I never got a response from. It's been months now and I don't know what to do.

My only options that I see are I can either:

  1. Create a fake listing in the city just like them, although I don't know how I'd get it approved.
  2. List correctly as a service area business, and always be at a competitive disadvantage.

What else can I do? I'm at the point where I'd actually pay someone to have the listings removed so they could properly be listed if that were possible.

Negative SEO attack

Is negative SEO still a thing? The last year we have gained thousands of backlinks the majority coming from long url blogs, some obviously pbns.

if i no follow them around 70% of our back links will be no follow, I'm concerned google might still drop our rankings even though these links are trash.

Does any one have experience with this? I'm hesitant to resolve this in how i normally would because our niche has been affected badly by google in the last year, i also know some competitors with hundreds of thousands of similar spammy links who have not no followed and are ranking much better than us.

Many 404's A Problem?

Apparently my site has over 1,000 404's--likely because I took down an online shop and deleted the WooCommerce plugin. Then, I deleted all the photos associated with the items that were for sale.

I was given some instructions for going into the htaccess file to remove 404's, but I'm worried that's over my head and I'll mess something up.

I'd love to avoid adding any plugins to my site, because I don't want to add more to the site and potentially slow it down (that's why I removed WooCommerce in fact).

Are these my only two options? And, does that many 404's really make a difference for my SEO strength?

When should I disavow links?

I'm looking through my links section on Google search console and noticed a lot of links from sites I've never heard of. One domain has 68 linking pages targeting one of my pages.

From the Moz toolbar (I realize not the most accurate source) it shows a spam score of 58% for the homepage. The page it's pointing to generates the most traffic for me. It's also the longest in word count by far, so I'm not sure if these links are having an effect or not on the page.

How Long Will it Take for Google to Re-Rank My Post? Also, Favorite Linkbuilding Strategy?

I recently just did a few rewrites on some posts and also optimized everything to my best ability. If the on-page SEO is truly effective, when should I start seeing results that push the post up in the rankings? Let's assume that everything else is equal and we all have the same number of links with the same effectiveness, so on-page SEO is all we're focusing on right now.

Also, what's your favorite link building strategy? Do you like to link to a big piece of pillar content that has internal links to other pieces of do you just link to whatever posts you think are most important? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

P.S., Does anyone know of a software or website that can track my posts' rankings according to different keywords/search intent?

My DA is now the same as it was in January 2019?

I’m a travel blogger, in a tiny but lucrative niche: cruise travel.

I know that domain authority is a fake metric. However, it’s one of the few metrics I have to see if I’m on the right track with my SEO, pleasing Google, and to give me proof of authority to collaborate with other travel bloggers and brands.

A bit of history: I started my cruise travel blog in July 2018. I’ve been tracking my DA since about the second month in, and my increases were slow and steady. Just what I expected.

I actually had to take several months off from blogging (very unexpectedly) in Fall 2018 due to three back-to-back deaths in my close family. While I was gone, my DA and SERP rankings slowly continued to grow.

I started working on my blog again in January 2019, and I noted on my chart that my DA was 11. By Spring I got my DA up to 14, then Moz’ algorithm update hit, and it dropped a bit.

Ever since then, it’s been going up or down by a couple of points with each Moz update, but in late November it just plummeted. It actually dropped to 10.

Honestly? I’m baffled.

Some points to consider:

  • I haven’t deleted or significantly changed content except for working on keyword optimization. Without fail, this has improved SERP results for every post I’ve updated.

  • I switched my theme from Elegant Themes (Divi) Extra to GeneratePress (pro version) In November to try to improve site speed.

  • I audited and deleted several plugins, purchasing some pro versions to consolidate redundancies.

  • I’ve been resizing and compressing images in new posts, and auditing old posts for bloated images.

  • My social shares continue to grow - I have several in the thousands. I have a new post from November that’s already at about 600 social shares without the heavy promotion I gave to my early posts.

  • My organic traffic continues to grow month-after-month.

  • My average time on page remains high ~5 minutes.

  • When I meet a brand rep in person, they jump at the chance to work with me (and they do). Anyone else (I’m assuming...they don’t give me a reason why) looks at my DA and nopes out.

My blog is a passion project for me right now. I don’t pump out blog posts for a quick win. But, I probably spend 20-25 hours a week on it, so it’s more than a hobby to me.

I try my best to provide heartfelt, well-thought-out free content to my audience.

Honestly? If I think a topic needs 1000 or 2000 or 10,000 words, I’ll keep working until it’s ready to publish. But if it takes 12k words (yes, I have one of those), I’ll take an extra week to write it and make it an amazing resource for my readers.

Does anyone have any insight as to why my DA has been stagnant for so long?

The concept of “you don’t know what you don’t know” has served me well over the years, both as a student and as a teacher. Am I missing something obvious?

My blog is shouldbecruising.com

I’ll take any advice or criticism! It’s a work in progress, but like I said before, I just want to make it better.

Thanks all!!

Many sites I've looked at listing from a directory perspective defer me to Yext to manage information and for a small single small business the approx $450/yr is quite pricey just to get listings established especially since they'll revert to our old address once I stop paying yext.

I don't mind doing the leg work for some site payment but I don't need massive SEO insertion.

Thanks again.

Be Human: Surprising New Ways to Get Startups, Content Sites, eCommerce Stores and Blogs Found in Search Results

Everyone knows search draws way more traffic than social media and paid ads. Getting found by Google is a profitable way to grow traffic and sales. Before pages are ranked though, search engines have to first find them. It used to take months, sometimes years, to get a site's content found by Google and major search engines. Even so, only a small percentage of internet content ends up indexed by Google. With a little help from eCommerce SaaS bots, like flare by Mansion Ecommerce, and some content ingenuity, owners of content sites, eCommerce stores and bloggers can tip the odds in their favor.

Before a site is ranked, it has to be found

Many site owners pour their time and budget into Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of their pages but forget a critical but simple first step: Ensure a way to inform Google, Bing, and other major engines. Instead of waiting for Google and Bing to find website pages, new machine-learning eCommerce bots like flare can proactively and verifiably push site updates to major search engines. These bots can map websites in a few minutes and push update notifications to Google and Bing daily. Unlike prior technologies, the new bots can verify Google and Bing have received the updates. It is like sending a certified mail instead of an un-verifiable mail drop-off.

Keep it human

Site owners must know these bots can verifiably submit website pages for consideration, but it is entirely up to the search engine algorithms to decide if the content is interesting enough to be picked up for display in search results. Google unveiled a deep learning update, BERT, which aims to determine the context of the search query as a whole instead of extracting keywords. Google's announcement: Say in the search sentence "Brazil traveler to USA needs a visa". The old algorithm would remove “to” and returned results about U.S. citizens traveling to Brazil. The BERT update uses the word “to” and understands the meaning. It’s about a Brazilian traveling to the U.S. and not the other way around.

Site owners, eCommerce stores and bloggers should watch for changes in organic traffic. If necessary, make the meta title and description more humanly readable and less like a bag of keywords. With Voice Searches on the rise, making these tags humanly readable can improve a site's chances of getting found in voice searches as well.

Keep at it and keep it real

Doing SEO once is virtually useless. To get in front and stay in front, one needs regular feeds to Google and Bing and keeping up with their algorithm changes. Bots, like flare by Mansion Ecommerce, deliver verifiable search engine feeds on a regular basis without taking up a site owner's time, so they can focus on creating content relevant to their customers, brand, and business.

Is it possible to see if Google is penalizing or throttling your website?

My site has traffic has been in a three year free-fall to almost no traffic - 1000 visitors a month. Is there any way to figure out why?

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated.

NYE events 2019 or NYE events 2020?

Hihi

Made a blog post of local events for my city, for NYE. I currently have it titled Calgary NYE events 2019, because we're still in 2019.

Wondering if it would be better for SEO to rename to 2020 though?

Thoughts? Thanks

“In this video” with skip functionality

Just saw it for the first time, searching for a video on google, the first result is a YouTube video, below it there’s a headline “in this video”, with an option to skip to specific parts, each time stamp with its own title.

Does anyone know how to do that?

Repost: Does the mention of child porn in a Terms of Service (I.E: No child porn is allowed!) hurt a website's search ranking?

Reposting this due to lack of feedback and information on the web, surely someone has a concrete answer about this? In the previous thread one person mentions it would for sure drop your rank, another states that google's algorithm should be intelligent enough to understand -- what do you guys think?

Maybe best to reword it?

Speed up your page load times!

Hey guys, I'm a web dev (~13 years experience) I've been working on page load times a lot lately and learning a lot. If you have a page you need sped up please comment and I will try to analyze it and respond (assuming I don't get too many). Comment with a link to a page you want to speed up and I'll try to tell you how to make it load faster with the least amount of work.

Caveat: I will be writing a blog post, so only share your link if you are ok with it being included in a case study post about page speed optimization.

New to SEO, how hard is it to have visitors ?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to SEO, currently learning with some books and online resources and I have some questions.

- How hard is it to have ~10k unique visitors per month ? Is it big or not so much ? because I don't have any idea of how hard is it to have unique visitors

- I'm graduated from bachelor degree in Computer Science, this year I want to learn many things and SEO is in my todo list. If I spend ~ 4 hours per day at learning and practice SEO, at the end of the year, how many visitors per month should I target/expect on niche websites ?

N.B. I'm french, sorry for my English

Many thanks

A significant amount of traffic started coming from a random bot website. How does this affect SEO?

Since roughly five days ago, about 80% of the traffic on our website has been coming from a source called getbottraffic4free[dot]xyz.

None of the website owners set this up and we are unsure why this traffic started coming to our website. We are also somewhat concerned that it may negatively impact our SEO.

Telephone number as anchor text and URL

<a href="+1111111111">+1111111111</a>. SEMrush audit is showing this as Malformed Link. Should I be concerned about this? Is there any alternate way to represent the phone number on website?

blog.domain.com for blog section vs domain.com/blog?

Hi,

I run a content writing company. The 'blog' portion of the website is focused on content that educates people on creating a blog, growing their traffic, writing blog titles, seo for blogs, etc... while the remainder of the website (e.g pages, homepage, etc...) is all centered around the actual content writing services we offer. With that being said, would it make sense to turn the blog section into a separate 'sub-domain' (I think it's called) like so - blog.domain.com , since the primary keywords on this blog section will be things like 'blogging' 'grow your blog' 'blog seo', etc..., while the remainder of the site will be focusing on keywords like 'travel content writing services' or cannabis blog writing services', 'hire nutrition writers'. Would appreciate any input.
