SEO people who managed to get a page (or pages) to #1 ranking position, how did you do it?

For instance, I found that later dot com has this top-ranking post of theirs appearing on position 0 and 1 if you search "instagram how to schedule posts":

I can imagine it bring them a lot of business. However, if you search "how to schedule instagram posts" Hootsuite's post appears as #0 and #1, Later's is just #2.

Trying to see a common thread between the two, they both are very long - sort of like a "mega-guide" on the issue. Is that what it boils down to, making the biggest and most exhaustive guide? I know it's not just this specific thing but I'm thinking maybe I need to go as deep as possible in a post to get closer to #1 position, not just limit myself at 1k words because anything over that might be too long for people.

How did you guys manage to get to #1 position in relevant searches? (obviously I'm not asking about if you search the company's name)
