First up, I just want to say that typically I don't look for other peoples PBNs because I'm not the kind of person who's going to go report them to Google. That's someone's livelihood and that's shitty. Plus Google is already after us. The only reason I'm looking into this is because it was requested of me from someone in the org that I can't brush off. This individual asks a lot of detailed questions about projects and what goes into SEO and I'm always very forthcoming with information. They want to know what the competitor is doing well, I'm guessing so that we can replicate it.
Second, I'm already super familiar with link strategies, PBNs, and the typical ways of finding your competitors links. This is not new to me, so please no replies like "just do an AHREFs search." That's not working - they obviously have all of the typical crawlers blocked from htaccess.
The site I'm referring to hides their links very well. As in... I can't find a single link that would be passing any meaningful PageRank and is going directly to the ranking pages or through a redirect. I have used several tools and many variations of sophisticated Google searches. I've even looked for links going to redirected pages on domains from their old mergers and acquisitions - nothing.
I'm almost at the point where I'm like "maybe there is something about their on-page SEO that Google loves and I'm just an idiot." The thing is, it's really not that special. Title tag is literally just "product - brand." Their content is okay - just sort of short and basic? The site isn't very fast on mobile. All in all, not great, not terrible. It's just mind boggling.
Also, I realize some people may not want to share their PBN-finding tricks here, so if you want to just send me a chat message, feel free.
