I don't fully understand backlinks

Hello everyone. I hope you're having a great day.

So uh where to start. Well, I am a total newbie as I recently started getting interested in building a website / blog, and I was doing A LOT of research about everything.

I have some basic knowledge of SEO, marketing stuff, keywords, etc. I read it all through different blogs, the biggest and most authoritative ones, like Neil Patel and Backlinko.

At several times, it was mentioned that Google favors sites with good backlinks. That it was basically someone mentioning your blog on their own blog. I think I read somewhere else that it helps to imagine each backlinks as points (dofollow tag of course). Up until there, it was fine.

Now the problem, actually something that got me confused is the number of backlinks. In their infographics (NP and Backlinko), it's actually a chart that shows the SERP rank depending on the number of backlinks. And I see 35k (wtf?) for a given no. 1 website.

Does this mean there are 35k blog posts that link back to their site?? That seems like a lot!

Can anyone clarify this whole thing for me please? I feel like I'm missing a point. Thank you.
