Regarding the update on the expansion of nofollow, here are the facts:

1) Google has added 2 new rel attributes to <a> tags, which are ugc and sponsored and are, as they have mentioned optional. There is no declared benefit to webmasters for using these attributes and we know even less about how Google is going to evaluate them.

2) The nofollow attribute will be treated as a hint from now on. This means that Google can choose to crawl and assign PageRank to a link with the nofollow attribute

3) Dofollow attributes don't exist, this is a false term coined by SEO tool providers. A regular link is a dofollow, but "dofollow" is incorrect. Regular links will continue to be processed by Google as they are today.

As for concrete advice on what to do about this:

1) Assume that gaining nofollow links may be of ranking value

2) Assume that because of point 1 that competitors with large amounts of nofollow links may become much more powerful in the near future without making significant changes to their website or link profile.
