What is more optimal - One super long regional travel guide (3k words) OR 3 shorter city guides (1k words each)?

Hey all,

I created a guide for - let's say 'road trip in south France' of nearly 3500 words. It describes 3 destinations in detail covering how to get there, where to stay, what to eat, see etc etc.

Now I'm wondering what is better from SEO perspective.

Extract 3 shorter articles (about 1k words each) from this long guide and target keywords for each of single destinations OR keep this 3k+ words long guide targetting generic 'holiday in south France' keyphrases?
What would be the most optimal method of treating content with multiple sub topics like in this guide?
