Analytics doesn't track GMB traffic?

I have noticed a 30% decrease in overall organic search traffic YOY for the same date range. My SEO vendor gave me this for reasoning: " "UTM codes tell analytics to put traffic into buckets. This UTM code told analytics to put traffic into the GMB bucket, but that bucket was never set up in analytics, so that traffic is not being tracked in analytics. "

I don't consider myself an expert, but I do have quite a bit of experience and I've never heard this.

I assumed that my GMB traffic, without a UTM would just show up as organic traffic in Acquisition overview. So last week I put a GTM code in to segment that traffic (which worked).

Am I missing something? I don't understand how the UTM would impact my overall organic search traffic.
