Expired Domain - Old URL, is it worth the work?

Hey all,

I usually shy away from expired domains, but I found one that is very close to my niche that has expired and has about 80 links pointing to it.

My question is - is it worth all the work recreating the pages on my site, or is it better just to do a 301 redirect to my root? It's not like I am buying this domain at auction so it is a pretty low cost test.

Also, since this site has been offline for a while (I assume they just let the domain expire), is there anywhere that would be able to give me a report on penalties etc?
