Changing hreflang

Hi guys

We have a .com domain that ranks in the UK currently but would like to have a .co.uk that ranks in the uk and then use .com in America (for a number of reasons)

We’re looking to change our hreflang so that it has the .co.uk site, which will free us to make changes to the .com domain to target the US market.

My question is, will adjusting the hreflang mean that we lose visibility In the uk? Or will google just swap out the .com with the .co.uk domain in the SERPS?
