Hey - caught a weird one. Been working with this client for a little over 6 months. They’ve had pretty solid optimization of titles and meta descriptions. Then a couple weeks ago, their search results all changed. Specifically, meta description tags are showing content from the <div> that contains the content in their top banner in the header, and then parts of their mobile menu once it’s expanded, which is handled by another <div> in their main html Template.
Here are some things I’ve already checked/done/ruled out:
- I’ve already triple checked that the meta description set in the CMS is in the page source
- there are no overrides present on the site or on any of the pages the where it’s showing up
- I added “data nosnippet” to both of the divs where the text is being pulled about 2 weeks ago
- requested reindexing of several pages to get the updates to appear
You can see the SERP by typing “site:ansgear.com” into chrome.
(I made sure to exclude referral traffic from reddit in their reporting to post this so it won’t mess up our data.)
Two weeks and still the same weird results. This coincided with the Sept algo update but I’m not sure why it would have had this impact. Like I said, things have been fine for months. Traffic and sales are down slightly so it’s not killing them but I’d like to get it resolved somehow.
Any ideas?
