Editing stock images to make them seem "Unique" to Google?

Hey there! New guy to this subreddit, and just landed an SEO Content Writer position. Been enjoying reading through this subreddit to learn and hone my skills, and I have a question:

There's been a correlation showing that Google seems to prefer "unique" images used within a website over one that is full of stock images that have also been used elsewhere. So this shows the best way to d this would be to take your own pictures, but what about downloading stock images, and editing them slightly (contrast levels, lighting, size, etc. et.c) and then uploading them to the website?

Would search engines register this as a "unique" and "new" picture, or would it pick up on this tactic quite easily?
