Google now combining duplicate page results in serp?

I’m using shopify so I had my inventory setup with different products per size of similar items, like big and small accessories for different gizmos - the same products but designed to integrate with different (but again similar) host items. I decided about 6 weeks ago to stop splitting my juice on google results between the two sizes and combined these into variants of a single product page and made plenty mention of both sizes on the page since it uses dropdowns. I would often be 2&3 or 3&4 on the results with the separate pages, I hoped this would combine ranks and give me a shot at #1, as well as reduce duplicate content since the items are the same other than size.

Now today I’m noticing google is showing both pages for a few competitors who have them separately split into two product pages like I had originally, with their 2 item pages in a single website result box with a line between them.

It’ll be a lot of work to re-split these, is there now a good reason to have multiple pages for similar products, to hog more pixels on the serps?
