Purchased competitive expired domain. Is this ethical?

I have purchased an expired domain that a competitor (in a different country) has let go. They sell the same software as we do and have some good backlinks even though it has been expired for 2 years. I know the guy that owned it and see him at the annual conference. (potentially awkward if he finds out?) He used the domain for seo like a car dealer would buy greatcars.com and link to joescarsales.com . I want to host the domain and provide redirects to my for all the old urls that he had. (sourced urls from Internet archive). Are there any legal or ethical implications? Also, any advice for how to do this to best take advantage of the backlinks? I prefer to do redirects to my site, not populate the resurrected domain.
