International SEO query

Hello

One of our clients (based in the UK) also operates in the Australia and the USA. Each country branch operates slightly separately and each have their own website. We're currently facing competition issues with the UK and the Australian domain, the UK domain is .co.uk but the Australian is .com (the US is .us.com).

What would be the best way to move forward to ensure that the Australian traffic is focused only in Australia and avoid overlap? I was thinking to suggest changing the Australian domain to .com.au and for them to focus their content more around Australia. As well as ensuring the local SEO optimisations are there and up-to-scratch.

Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks
