A client had an interesting question that I can't seem to find any info on. When looking at their location on Google Maps, they have the basic marker. Area businesses nearby have custom "category" markers (restaurant, hotel, etc).
How does Google decide which nearby establishments to show up on the map? Do they only show certain "categories" of suggested businesses? Is there a way to replace the "default" marker on maps and more importantly, is there a way to optimize this so your business becomes a "suggested" business, outside of normal local SEO best practices?
