So a client asked for my opinion on EKM for SEO. There was a LOT of things I wasn't a fan of but hey they don't take much comission and everything looked managable.
I couldn't figure out how to get category pages to have a good logical hierarchy so I dropped their support a message
I was looking to do something like this...
-
/shop/sports-nutrition/protein/vegan-protein/
-
/weights/weight-bars-and-collars/olympic-bars-collars
-
shop/sports-nutrition/whey-protein/
Heres the reply:-
"So I moaned about not being able to control the site url structure. Category’s don’t follow a logical order. Apparently this is an old school tactic :)
I’ve told my client to steer clear but what do you guys think?
“Hope you had a nice weekend and thankyou for your patience on this.
I've asked some of the EKM experts here and they kinda said that this is old school way of looking at SEO. There are a few articles that categorically state that URL structure has no bearing on page performance in search results:
google-click-depth-matters-seo-url-structure/256779/ - from search engine journal (had to remove links)
/url-structure-affect-seo/
Regardless of the URL we will be submitting your sitemap to Google Search Console anyway, which is the single most powerful way of getting Google to understand the anatomy of the site. Furthermore, each page has a breadcrumb on it and this uses schema data to demonstrate where a page exists relative to its category structure.
One thing we do agree on when it comes to URLs is that they have keywords present and not just and ID number, so:
/product?productid=123213 would be a bad URL
/mens-nike-flyknit-trainers-12.asp would be much better
EKM uses the second style, which includes the product or category names. We've got countless examples of EKM shops that rank really highlight for their keywords.
Thanks very much and hope this helps “"
I never even replied, didn't think there would be much point. I pretty much have advised my client to go elsewhere and find another CMS. I just don't get how a CMS that has so many good reviews and a lot of users lacks some basic functionality.
