This Letter we received from our SEO company. Can anyone tell me if this is BS? We currently use Wordpress.

Action Required PHP 5.6 has reached it's "End of Life"

We are reaching out to let you know that action is needed regarding your website, or it will come down and there is nothing we can do to stop this.

PHP 5.6 is coming to an end and updates are mandatory to remain hosting with SEO COMPANY and it's servers. PHP is the server-side scripting language used in coding out websites, simply put, it is the "engine" to your "car".

As we venture further into 2019, servers everywhere are forcing the update into effect to avoid websites being compromised or hacked. This is a necessity as the original 5.6 will no longer be supported. This means if no action is taken with your website, it will be vulnerable to attack and break. Major servers will not allow a 5.6 or under website to exist past March 2019. This is to protect them, you, and every other website located on them.

By the end of March 2019, major servers will be forcing the update. Up until the end of last year, websites were natively built on PHP 5.6. Now as the web moves to PHP 7.2 and upwards, hosting servers are being required to upgrade web-wide. Converting a website from PHP 5.6 to 7.2 may cause things to break on your website as it is a new "engine" to drive it. This includes, but is not limited to:

  1. Plugins
  2. Backend Functionality
  3. Website Appearance
  4. Website Communication to 3rd Party Applications

At SEO COMPANY we value your ability to remain operational online with your website. We want to help in every way possible and will update the website as needed at the rate of $100 per hour. In doing so your website will remain up-to-date, be secure, and can continue hosting with SEO COMPANY. We need to know by Feb 25th the course of action you like to take. We are sending this to you by email, standard mail and our office will ensure the best customer service. We have 1000's of clients. We need to schedule this out to ensure it does not affect your business.

If you would like to instead take ownership of your website and make the required edits, we request that the website is moved to your own hosting. We would be more than happy to assist in packaging up your website for redeployment on your new server.

We are dedicated to guiding and helping you through this necessary process as the web makes a shift to better users' security. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you may have.
