Question about a DA 44 site I just bought

I have a question for you seos.

I recently purchased a website in my niche that has a decent DA (44) and 900+ completely white hat linking root domains. The problem is that the domain name of the site has absolutely nothing to do with the niche.

I found a perfect domain name for the site - would it be worth it to 301 redirect the site to the new domain name? Does it matter that the anchor text for 1/4 of the linking domains uses the old site name?

The site gets hardly any search traffic (it's a hobby recipe site and the old owner knew absolutely nothing about seo), so I'd like to do the redirect now BEFORE I turn it into a proper affiliate site and affect the rankings.

I'd love your input!
