Article within a category targeting same keyword as title of category

Wondering if anyone could confirm if there's any downsides to this:

Basically I have an article over 1000 words in length, which is targeting a specific keyword, however the keyword is also the name of the category.

Will the article rank higher than the category, or vice versa?

Also, when targeting long-tail keywords - I'm thinking of creating new articles to target long-tail keywords, under the same category as the main article. Is this ok to do for rankings?
