How accurate is Google's ' average position'

In your experience, how accurate is Google's ' average position' ?

Our site shows as 2nd across the country for our primary keyword - we have a SERP tracker ' accuranker' which shows an average of 2nd for the last 8 months.

​

Since Friday, google has shown an average rank of 3.6, I cannot see a single piece of evidence to support this number.
