Two of my websites are ranking for the same keyword - what should I do?

Hi Reddit SEO friends,

Here's a quick background for my question: a company I'm doing SEO for has a main parent brand that oversees a number of individual local brands--each of which operates at a brick-and-mortar location somewhere in the US. The parent brand has its own website and so do each of the local brands.

So far, my efforts have been in optimizing the local brand websites, as those are the websites primarily ranking for target keywords in the local markets (as opposed to the parent brand). Today, however, I noticed that the main parent site is outranking one of the local brands for a target localized keyword. I did some digging in and found that the local brand website in question is still largely outperforming the parent site (looking at clicks, impressions, rankings for target kws), but there are indeed a number of keywords for which the parent site is outranking the local brand site.

I hadn't really worried about this parent site until now because it just wasn't an SEO focus, but now I'm wondering what to do with it due to its current presence in the SERPs. Will both of these sites being in the same SERPs hurt each other's rankings? Let's say a given keyword has the parent site ranking at 8 and the local brand at 9 -- if I removed or noindexed the parent site page, could that help boost up the local brand website's ranking? Or should I just try to optimize both sites for the same keywords and boost both of them up in the SERPs?

Looking forward to people's opinions here. I'm happy to provide additional info if it'd be helpful!
