What's the actual impact of having images resolved through a CDN without a CNAME?

I've configured a site to offload its media to S3 and serve them through CloudFront. Subsequently set up a CNAME (cdn.mysite.com) to use instead of the bare CloudFront URL, as I'm told that for best SEO results, images should be on the same domain as your site.

Would like this to be an automated thing I can roll out to my clients, but setting up the CNAME in particular would be a chore to automate. What's the actual impact of skipping that part, and is it worth worrying about?
