Event based SEO site + Amazon Affiliates

Hi,

First time posting here so forgive me If I don't format properly. I run a small informational/product recommendation site for a certain event once a year. My main source of traffic is ranking for one long tail keyword "best x for x".

I have only driven 13k organic views so far this year however I can see that my amazon affiliates income is starting to pick up and I took all the money I made last year and paid seo guy to help re format some articles and do keyword research but it wasnt much help.

Questions:

Just wondering if there's anything you guys think I should be/could be doing to bolster traffic to my site for the next 2 months before the event ends and I wait another year for it to pick back up? Should i be writing content pieces to try and get more niche long tail keywords? If so whats the best way to find these long tail keywords people are searching for?

I know it sounds dumb but I was so excited last year when I made about $2k from the site it felt like my first successful project and I want to build on it if I can. Thanks in advance.
