Short SEO Interview for MBA Project

Hello,

I am an MBA student at Cal State Fullerton. For our capstone project my MBA team is consulting with a small local business on improving their online presence and helping to develop a digital marketing strategy. I am looking to conduct a short interview (no more than 10 minutes) with experts in the SEO field. If you offer services in this area I will gladly include your business information in our report for our client to consider if they would take the path of hiring experts in this area.

If anyone would be kind enough to give me a few minutes of your time I would really appreciate it.

Thank you!!!

Are short tail keywords included in long-tail keywords? [YouTube]

Hey there! Having a bit of trouble finding the answer to this. Say for example I title a video a long-tail keyword like "Harry potter book review 2020 ".

Would that mean I would have the chance to rank for both "Harry Potter" & "Book review". This one is an example & I'm trying to do something similar with a title.

Any help much appreciated!

Resource Page Link Building

So, I was looking up link building strategies and came across resource LB tactic which seems to involve an awful lot of steps, particularly with filtering out irrelevant results which could take up long time.

Have you guys tried it? Not sure if I should bother with such a time-consuming tactic.

Toxic domains linking my website can harm my SEO?

Hey, guys! I have a question.

The Backlink Audit report of SemRush shows that my website has a lot of toxic and potentially toxic domains backlinking it. It's organic, as my news website is a major one in Brazil, and a lot of pages link us all the time.

Can these toxic domains be harmful to my SEO performance? I can see a lot of these pages uses us for black hat SEO strategies, but we don't have any participation with it. What we should do to avoid it?

Thanks!

Key takeaways from the C3 Conductor Conference 2021

Hey there,

Last week was the online version of this year's C3 Conductor conference, and I asked my team members who attended to compile the brief notes around the small workshops that happened.

So, without further ado, here are some key takeaways from the conference, session by session:

Video 1- Introduction to the conference

Video 2- Elements of a perfect pitch with Daymond John

The key take away- 1. Prioritize your customers

  1. Learn about their goals

  2. Hear your client's requirements and find ways to save their time, energy, and money

  3. Focus on the target audience of your client

  4. Offer results and make sure that you deliver what you promised

  5. Compensate when required

  6. Research your client and try to find common ground to connect with them

  7. Give power to your clients and make them feel important while you listen carefully to their instructions

  8. Build a story around your products so that they resonate with the audience

  9. Be warm, friendly and make everyone feel comfortable enough to reach out to you for discussion

  10. Offer knowledge to clients

  11. Design a pitch that influences the core value of the audience and resonates with the cause

  12. Check up on your customers and value their feedback

Video 3- Content and collaboration with team SEO

  1. Do your SEO oriented research before starting a content piece

  2. Use SEO tools in content creation

  3. Write H1 Tags, description, and headings before you start a piece, and follow it strictly

  11. Be transparent about the revenue generation to everyone in the firm

  12. Use tools like Google Analytics to keep track of performance

Video 4- Evolving Organic Marketing

  1. Focus content upon what people are searching on a local and global levels

  2. Focus on producing performance-based content that drives organic traffic, sales and generates leads

  3. Create content that resonates with the audience and answer the queries typed in search engines

  4. Have your employees understand the complete process and impact of organic marketing, topics, and keywords. It will help to perform content that satisfies the viewers' demand sitting on the other side.

  5. Include data in your content strategy and keep updating it periodically to create significant results.

  6. In case of doubts, go back to the basics-

• Explain to clients what you are doing and why you are doing it

• The benefits of the process

• Involve other experts and focus on how the results will affect the brand image and how this content is adding value

Video 5- Adapting SEO to customer evolution with Agility

Consumer behavior changes over 2020 pandemic

• User behavior changed as customers ensure that the essential workers are wearing proper gear for protection.

• The companies noticed the shift in the demand for seasonal products and other things which were not very popular earlier.

• Companies are more focusing on the visual aspect to create content as per the status of their surroundings. An example of this will be adding images that involve masks and social distancing.

• Be available for customer support to show that you are here to help if things go wrong with your products. Provide a simple DIY solution to the applicant as well.

Content prediction for 2021

Hub And Spoke Approach

• Mark a core content and make other copies supporting and revolving around the same content, including social media posts, email, podcast, video, etc.

• Use tools like answer the public and repurpose the content that proves beneficial for viewers.

• Add different multimedia and go beyond the texts to reach your client and gain more visibility. Focus on different ways the audience can consume the content.

Strategist shift mindset

• The content should be focused on your brand and justify your services.

• Create the audience persona if you are writing for B2B or B2C audience

Content credibility

The credibility of the authors is required to ensure that the content is of high authority. You must be hiring subject matter experts to write technical content for the viewers.

Remote work and more opportunities

Online dependability has opened more opportunities for talent, and employers have access to this talent pool.

Red flags

*Disconnected and inefficient content production from different teams provides no value to the audience

*Having tons of content does not immediately mean success

*Avoid having to optimize your content once it has been written. *Rather have a complete research framework on your table before you start writing the content

*Not giving enough time to publish the blogs

*Divide the work as per the expertise, and avoid doing everything on your own

Video-7 Core web vitals update

What is Page Experience update about?

• It will be launched mid-June and will end by august

• It will have 3 core web vitals apart from existing search metrics

• The update will be applicable for mobile searches

• A visual indicator with great page experience will be added to the page, but the valuable content will still be the most valued component over page experience signals

• Apart from the pre-existing signals like mobile browsing, safe browsing, HTTPS no intrusive interstitials, another 3 core web vitals ( loading, interactivity, and visual stability) are added

Loading (LCP-Largest Content Paint)

• Time required to load the main content of the page, be it text or the image

• Time taken should not be more than 2.5 seconds

Interactivity (FID-First Input Delay)

• Time required by the browser to open a link the user has clicked upon. The delay could be because of Java scripts or the involvement of the browser in other things.

• Time taken should not be beyond 100 milliseconds

Visual stability (CLS- Cumulative Layout Shifts)

• It refers to the stage where you click on a link but jumps from one page to another page you don't want to see

• The time allotted for this is 0.1 sec which implies it should not happen ever and leads to a bad user experience

Page experience affects your performance

  1. The increase of page speed from 1 sec to 6 sec increase the page bouncing rate by 106%

  2. Websites fulfilling the core web vitals criteria make it 24% less likely for anyone to leave the website

  3. Optimizing web vitals lead to an 8% increase in sales

  4. Although it will not kick you back in the search engine results, it is still going to affect your rank, especially if you are ranking in the top SERPs

What can you do?

  1. Track the KPIs you are ranking for and keep an eye on your competitors' ranking just after you.

  2. Use Google search console to get the data for indexed pages and page experience reports.

  3. Use Page speed insight tool to get breakdown results for mobile and desktop and work where the improvements are required.

  4. Use Deepcrawl to get multiple page metrics and get them categorized. Also, get the issues reported with HTTPS pages in config and issue reports.

  5. Perform an audit for your site to fix as many issues as you can.

Landing Page or Other?

How effective is the multiple landing page strategy for a local business? If I register several local domain names like "New York Podiatrist" and "Brooklyn Podiatrist" and create landing pages for the actual business like "Goodman Podiatry" for those domains, assuming there is already an official "Goodman Podiatry" practice website, would those landing pages really help or could they hinder, would Google see them as repetitive spam and possibly black list them?

Meta Data for e-commerce websites

Hello!

How do you go about creating compelling titles and meta descriptions for e-commerce websites with thousands of products?

I'd like a WP-plugin that allows you to set a fallback logic based on rules.

So for e.g, [Product Name] | Best price online | [Brand Name]. If over 60 characters > [Product Name | [Brand Name].

Is there anything like this out there or how do you go about creating the meta data?

Getting Started

Hi all.

I'm trying to move out of my crappy retail job and do something with my life. Something that has always caught my eye is SEO.

My question is, where do I start?

I'm guessing I need a website to practice on? My problem with that is I don't have one and can't think of anything I could make that would be of any interest. I don't really have any interest big enough/knowledge about anything worth reading about to make a website about to practice on.

Any advice on how to learn, get into SEO or if I should make a website about something just to practice on would be great. Thank you.

We just purchased the top ranking business, what do we do now?

TLDR; we're the #2 ranking site for a great and relevant search term. We recently purchased the company ranking #1... Their name is the exact search term and their site is getting the Google sidebar when someone types that term. We don't want to run two businesses and don't want to change our name. What should we do with the new site/name?

Let's say my company is called Books books. We sell books and we live on Mars.

When someone searches "Mars Books" this is what the SERP shows:

  1. Mars Books (the company we just purchased)
  2. Books books (us)

The SERP also shows a sponsored ad for us (booksbooks) and a big Maps sidebar for marsbooks.

We aren't planning on running two companies -the purchase was mainly to prevent other smaller companies from getting the brand, and to acquire all of their books for ourselves. We like our branding better and are not going to change our name or website to theirs.

So what do we do now? Is the best bet to just kill off the new page so it's one less result to compete with? Seems like a bit of a waste as it's a good site, but it doesn't really serve any purpose to us.

Most importantly: is there any way we can utilise their Google My Business to keep getting that google sidebar but for our original company with the name which isn't the exact search term? It seems like there are severe penalties for companies trying to run multiple My Business accounts routing to a single website. If we kill off the top ranking site, will Google just give the sidebar to the next ranking business (i.e., us)? Or is the sidebar only for businesses who's name is the exact same as the search term?

UTM Parameters in Google Analytics 4

Hi all,

So I've been having a frustrating issue with Google Analytics. I have UTM parameters which are properly set up, but the data is made available only in the most useless way possible.

The source/medium/campaign data are available on the Acquisitions tab - however the term/content are not. I've tried all of the obvious ways, most notably clicking on the blue "+" and attempting to add the data from there.

The data I'm looking for is only available on the Events screen, and even then only in the analysis of a particular event within the last 30 minutes. That's the ONLY place I can find it.

The good news is that the data is available, but I've no idea how to find it outside of that context so that we can properly analyze the display ad performance on a granular enough level.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Why I chose A lifestyle Blog Over A specific Niche Blog!

With a lifestyle blog, you have no limit to what you can blog about, this is what makes it even great. Imagine you hit writer's block and all the long-tail keywords have articles on your site already published. What do you do?

This is where lifestyle blogs excel. The domain name can be your personal name so that it is not niche-based.

The traffic potential for lifestyle bloggers is great and limitless. I sympathize with travel bloggers because at this time they are experiencing a traffic decline.

With a lifestyle blog, you can talk about all your interests be it traveling, cooking, and so much more. Since the rollout of the YMYL categories by Google, I can go into any of the niches targeting easy keywords that don't require much E.A.T because I can easily rank for them with just a little push from Pinterest.

If you explore Pinterest you should realize that lifestyle bloggers get huge volumes of monthly impressions because they gather all audiences in a wider category of niches.

This also allows bloggers to increase their traffic to join better-paying ad networks or even make huge commissions on affiliate products.

Do you think Lifestyle blogs are a way to go I could be wrong, what do you think?

Why is seo so weird?

I just want to share my experience, I'm a professional but I wouldn't call me an expert, I started my journey being a student and made some websites that kind of worked and was the reason I started getting jobs as a seo, I have learned a lot since then because I've been able a lot of expensive tools that I couldn't afford and I'm getting good results for the company I work for. Since all that happen I decided to star my own projects in my spare time and right now I'm working in a drop shipping with my girlfriend and in a blog that I'm going to transform into an affiliate website in the future. The funny thing about it is that I'm perfectly optimizing the blog, images, videos, kw density, interlinking, I looked for a not so competitive niche, etc; and the drop shipping that I'm making with my girl that is barely optimized just has a kw research for the product titles, but it stills has some names from aliexpress due to oberlo importing products, and it's in a super competitive niche is getting 10 times more traffic than the other. I can image some mistakes that I'm making and also the fact that 2 people are working in it has more ideas for the content and ux. Anyways, this only teaches me that I still have a lot learn about seo and that optimizing isn't everything.

Hope you guys can learn from my experience, share your stories, teach me something or just enjoy my horrible English.

TLDR: the messy website that I'm making with my girlfriend has 10 more traffic that the website "over optimized" That I'm making by myself.

Have Any of You Ranked Health Sites Recently? Is it Even Possible Post YMYL-EAT?

I've wanted to create a health/nutrition site for a long time and after my recent project is completed it's something I'd like to do.

However, with Google's EAT/YMYL update in 2018, I've been wondering if it is actually possible rank health-related sites nowadays?

Has it eased off? Can you even rank health-related website without being a conglomerate with a panel of PhD editors? I really have not been paying attention to this part of SEO in the past few years.

I have noticed Googles overall push towards a more corporate internet (where sites like Business Insider now rank for health queries and Home Living Magazines ranking for esoteric terms), which has me doubley worried when making a health site of all topics.

However, I did see a site like NerdFitness ranking for some health terms, and they are definitely not corporate like Healthline, WebMD, etc.

To reiterate, can you rank a health site post YMYL-EAT if you're not a company with a panel of doctorate editors? Is it possible?

My international domain nightmare

Hi all - I have an Australian .com.au shopify online store that I also own the .co.nz to. Last year in an effort to rank better with NZ customers I used hreflang tags to have both a .co.nz and .com.au presence. I also now have two merchant center feeds, allowing me to show my products with a .co.nz in google ads. However shopify has no way of neatly converting prices for shipping so essentially a nz customer will always know it's an Aus company. I don't want to be cloak and dagger either, I just initially did it for search reasons. I've seen minimal change so far and it's hard to tell what trend is what with a huge rise in online shopping over the pandemic anyway.

So my question is would you expect a .co.nz domain to rank so much better in a google nz search engine (.com.au competitors to rank in google nz) that warrants a lot of extra pain and headache? Managing the multiple feeds takes a special app which is buggy and its just all extra headache, and you can argue it's less clear to a nz shopper.

Thanks!

What is it called when you can click 'sublinks' on google?

This is a very basic question, so I hope I posted it to the correct community.

For example, when you search 'youtube' on google, you can click on the main site, but you can click 'about' or 'safety' as well.

Should I switch to WordPress from Wix?

How to Write Product Page Copy?

I'm currently in the process of trying to rank my new marketplace style website. We are a very niche marketplace and currently have over 600 products listed. However, all of those products are simply different designs of the same product (i.e., different colors, color patterns). To make it easier when uploading products, I had our web developers make a product page template that uses the same product description for just about all products.

Is this going to hurt our SEO ranking due to repetitive keyword usage on over 600 product pages?

Dofollow/Nofollow backlinks

Could someone explain to me in layman's terms how a Search Engine would know if you're using dofollow backlinks inappropriately?

I'm struggling to understand why one wouldn't always use dofollow links (unless they really actively didn't want to have a positive SEO influence on whatever they're linking, in which case why would you even link them in the first place?).

I'm understanding there is more to it, but i'm struggling to grasp what that is and how a search engine puts you in their good or bad books.

Expired domain whose keywords are all ranking just on the home page...now what?

Hey everyone,

Wondering if I could get your advice on something. I just bought an expired domain, and most of the ranking keywords (not all of them) but most of them are ranking only on the homepage.

I've rebuilt the domain from the ground up, written better posts targeting the same keywords, and redirected the rest of the applicable pages to both the posts and the category subfolder, but will that help?

Will Google eventually recognize that the posts should rank for the keywords, not the home page?

What are silos in SEO? Does it mean to connect your web pages through contextual links in a systematic manner?

I recently heard about this concept and what I understand is that connecting your web page contextually (anchor links) in a systematic manner ( Main page to the last page)

For e.g.

Home page linked to service 1, service 2 & Service 3 (contextually - on keywords like service 1)

Service 1 linked to service 1a, service 1b & service 1c

Service 2 linked to service 2a, service 2b & service 2c

All these pages are contextually linked

Is this called siloing? Even if it is not, is it good to follow the above strategy

Website copied and content scraped - What to do about it?

So the site is a few years old and has been publishing casino reviews and bonuses and generally had decent traffic. However, recently it has been scraped and republished like crazy all over the place. The sites doing it are super weird and just redirect to sketchy online casinos.

Searching Google for my site brings up loads of scraped content mostly redirecting to affiliate sites, but also some strange duplicated sites where they have copied my logo and stuff but inverted the clours.

Any ideas on what to do about this? There's no way any of these sites are going to be contactable.

Page Rankings took a dive after adding alt texts, what do I do now?

Hello guys,

I recently messed up a couple of pages on my site which caused the pages to tank and lose their rankings on Google. My site is built of Wordpress and I am using the Yoast basic SEO plugin.

What happened was that I went to add alt texts to the images on my site. This caused Google to crawl those alt texts and soon enough, my pages disappeared from Google with the keywords that I focused on.

I realized this and immediately went to delete all alt texts from the site.

1 out of 2 of the pages are back. However, the more important page isn't even in the top 10 yet. This page was ranked 2nd before I added the alt texts. What can I do now?

For some context:

The page that lost its ranking, the focus keyphrase was "Coffee Workshop Singapore" but somehow it got 2nd place when people searched "Latte Art Workshop Singapore"

I have since created another page to cater to this keyword with the focus keyphrase "Latte Art Workshop Singapore"

How to handle NAP in citations with multiple locations?

I have a few locations now. I'm trying to elevate my Google Maps, since my organic positions are gaining progress, but not my Maps. I read that one factor that could help is having my NAP (name, addr, phone) accurately displayed everywhere. The issue is that I built a lot of citations on directory websites and other sites with my 1st location, and many of those sites only allow 1 location. Will this be an issue for Google recognizing my other 2 locations as legitimate and ranking me in Google Maps?

paid posts vs guest posts

Some Seo gurus have expressed the importance of seeking guest posts, as opposed to paid posts (like on a site such as adsy where the blog posts their anticipated price but obviously needs to approve it first) ...but aren't most blogs expected to charge post an article anyway? Is there really a difference between searching buzzsumo and manually messaging every potential blog rather than having the convenience of negotiating on one platform? If you had $3-5k a month for pure SEO, who would you hire or request a bid from?

No one on our team has professional SEO experience. We've worked with small vendors to save money, and it's been horrifyingly bad. We are luckily in a very non competitive space, and have at least a base built regarding content, backlink profile, etc. (domain is almost 2 years old, 5 Top 5 results, 40 Top 10s, 250+ top 50s).

As the head of marketing/sales, I've lambasted our teams previous choices, so I now have carte blanche to go out and find that right solution. We need an SEO partner - someone that will allow us to partake in some of the content creation (it's a niche market), a firm that will take the time to understand our market and competitors, someone that is willing to negotiate price if we bring on our second product line, etc.

We are not a tiny outfit, but we do have a tight budget today. $3k a month is near the top of our budget, but we receive a capital injection this summer, with a LARGE portion of that earmarked for marketing.

Has ANYONE had great success working with larger firms? Social SEO out of Colorado springs is the only large company that even appeared to look at our RFI before responding/sending us an offer. Desperately looking for others to compare them with.

SEO Collection Pages VS 'Simple' Collection Pages [SHOPIFY]

Should we have SEO based Collections or SIMPLIFIED Collections?

We have a wide range of the same basic product.

Which obviously has a lot of 'similar' keywords that include the basic product, that perhaps we'd like to rank our collection pages for.

That said, there maybe some overlap, or the categories aren't actually that distinct, for example:

  • "Fast Computers"
  • "Micro Computers"

Another issue is we have a separate category that can include both Fast & Micro, and gets lots of searches ie

  • Steel x Computers
  • Aluminum x Computers

Obviously these could all be simply under the same 'computer' collection.

QUESTIONS

  • How important is simplifying the categories?
  • How many categories is 'too many' or 'too few'?
  • What about a 'materials' category?
  • How important is having different collections pages for SEO?
  • How damaging will having different collections pages leading to the same products be?

Thanks.

£99 for a single backlink?!

I've got an agency doing some content writing and backlinking for me because I've never done any backlinking myself before. However last night I decided I'm gonna give it a go to learn how to do it.

I used ubersuggests to see where my competition in first position was getting their backlinks from. I randomly picked a backlink that was coming from a DA50 domain. I clicked through to it and saw that it was basically an article with a anchor text link back to my competitors website using my main keyword. I found some contact details on the site and emailed the site owner asking how my competitor got this backlink and if there was any scope of me getting the same.

To my surprise they emailed me back quickly. This was the reply:

"I can do link insertions (with or without a short provided blurb) on existing articles for £99GBP - payable via Paypal"

£99 seems a bit steep to me for a single backlink. Is this normal?

What are you guys paying?

Micro niche in fitness- do you need qualifications and do you absolutely have to do youtube?

Hi, I would like to start a blog in a microniche of the fitness industry because I have passion for it and I have a decent amount of knowledge on the topic. I am not an expert at all but I am a fan of massaging, massage guns, massage balls, foam rollers so I have been thinking of something like: massage tools for home use for non-athletes (for people who sit all day and get stiff) /massage tools for calisthenics /massage tools for mma. So I would write product reviews on for example foam rollers and massage guns but also content like what causes certain kinds of stiffness, what are trigger points to aim for with massage guns etc.

But I am a bit stuck so my questions would be:

  1. Do you think this niche is not too broad or should I niche down even more?
  2. Do you think that I will be able to progress from this niche or is fitness so competitive that I will be stuck in my small niche because of big players?
  3. Would I really need to have qualifications like a massage therapist or personal trainer (I've heard that a lot) just to write a blog/do youtube on this?
  4. Will I absolutely have to start a youtube channel to progress? I did a bit of research and about 30-50% of SERPs for massage gun keywords are just 4 youtube videos on the top of the SERP. So is it unlikely that my blog would beat these (not so viewed) youtube videos even if I have better content? Do youtube videos almost always beat blogs in the fitness industry?

Google Ads preview vs Bright Local

I was hoping you guys could shed some light on this. I'm doing my own seo for my business, and I am trying to track how I rank locally. I have been using Bright Local Serp checker, isearchfrom and Google Ads preview for the first page (when applicable). Also tracking on Semrush daily.

I'm seeing different results... I rank first page for a specific keyword according to Bright Local, but if I check the Google Ads preview tool, I see different results. Which one should I deem reliable? I would say Google is the source so it should be the most relevant? Are all the other tools inaccurate then?

FAQ doesn't show on google although it is valid in search console.

I have three websites in a have a FAQ part for every page on these sites but despite the fact that they are on the first page google doesn't show them. On one of the pages, google did show it just for a couple of days but that is for 3 months ago.

I wonder if anybody here had a similar problem and did it solve or not?

Is it possible to fake GTmetrix or Page Insight scores?

Hi there,
So a few weeks ago I hired someone to improve my Page Insight and GTmetrix score. The score on GTmetrix came back all A's and nearly perfect. The Page Insights went from 8 to 80 on desktop. The actual speed when eyeballing myself, didn't really feel much different but I thought...hey the score is better?

A few days later after I tipped him for doing an amazing job. The score dropped back to where it was.
So it makes me wonder.....did I get duped?

Do you have to add Cookie Banner to your website with basic Google Analytics

Hello r/SEO

I was wondering how Cookie banners work with Google analytics. I heard that you don't have to put a cookie consent banner if you are using the basic version but with the advanced version you do (because it provides more detailed information). Can someone clarify this?

Also, what happens to websites that don't put cookie consent banners altogether if they ARE tracking data. Thanks!

client filling meta descriptions with just keywords

Hey, I'm a Shopify expert, and my client has filled all 194 product meta descriptions with just keywords with 320 characters. The product description is not displayed at all in it, is this a bad idea for him to do this or is it safe but it'll give his site a bad SEO score?

What are your favorite books on SEO?

I am looking for recommendations of outstanding books on SEO.

Nowadays, in the age of easy publishing, there's a lot of crap, garbage books out there -- quickly hammered together, shit pamphlets that are like 108 pages printed in size 26 font. What's more the people that publish this trash find a way to get like 10-20 five-star reviews, fooling you into buying their books.

I say that to say: There seem to be a lot such books on Amazon on SEO. I've gotten pretty good at spotting the spammy ones based on their titles, cover designs and so on, but I want to really go deep on SEO and read a ton of books.

So I'm looking for recommendations of books you've personally read that are SOLID. What are some good ones that you'd recommend to someone trying to really take their SEO game to the next level?

The ones I have read so far are:

How To Get To The Top Of Google

SEO For Growth

3 Months To No. 1

All good ones, but I feel like I have gaps in my SEO game that I need to fill. Any other good ones you could recommend to someone hungry to learn about this subject?

Thanks to all.

SEO competitors analytical site?

I have a question regarding SEO sites. I am looking for a paid SEO analytical site we can use. It needs to run a SEO report for the client and for 5 of their competitors. And it would be awesome if it could be embeddable on our site and create a white label pdf report.

Does a site/service like this exist? I know there are plenty that will analyse 1 site but I am looking for a service that can analyse a total of 6 sites at the same time (main plus 5 competitors) and spit out a white label pdf report. Thanks

Does a link from a sponsored article have any SEO value?

I am considering paying for a sponsored post that would appear on nowtoronto dot com in their brand voice section. For example go to nowtoronto dot com, scroll to the bottom where it says "brand voices" then click on one of those articles for example "Coors Seltzer launches the easiest and most refreshing ‘volunteer’ program in time for April 22". on the following article page there are links they are do follow links. Do these links have any value? or does google "know" that this is a paid post and just ignore the link value / not pass any juice?

OK i just noticed that some of the sponsored articles on this website are actually listed as "nofollow sponsored" where as other sponsored articles don't have this on the links. For example look at the article titled: "Sell your house, support the food bank?" (you might have to search this in google to find it, it's not recent).

So my updated question is, if the article has links and they are not explicitly "nofollow" but the article lives in this same section as the rest of the sponsored content. does it pass link juice?

Upskilling great writers to also be great at SEO - better approach?

Over the past few years, I've worked closely with content teams where the typical scenario was me helping upskill the teams of writers and subject matter experts to better optimize their content for SEO. Generally, the advice I gave was to know "best practices" for topics, keywords, layout, titling, etc., WITHOUT sacrificing the value or impact of their writing. A blog no one wants to read will fail even if it's perfectly optimized for search.

The concept of this sounds great, but practically it's far from perfect as a good number of people get overwhelmed and struggle to grasp the concepts or reject the creative interference. On the other side, others go too far and lose their creative edge and look to SEMRush, Mangools, etc. to steer their direction instead of informing and help guide. I've even seen a team where the copyeditor was also well versed in SEO skills and would optimize the copy before publishing without writer input.

In understanding that from pitching to publishing that having some foresight for search can help illuminate massive opportunities, is my experience par for the course, or are there better approaches to help teams up their SEO game?
