Is this a matter of competing keywords? What can i do retake my #1 and #2 positions?

Hello all, i wish you a happy new year!

TL;DR: I share lecture notes for university students and i use the same keyword for every post a have about a lecture. I have 8-10 post with "general pyhsics lecture notes" because they are what they are, general pyhsics lecture notes. Is this a very bad strategy and what can i do instead?

I have a website that i share lecture notes for a specific area. Let's say it's engineering. I use categories and divide the notes by semester and lecture. So the lecture notes page for General Pyhsics looks like this: ... com/semester-1/general-pyhsics-lecture-notes

I post every general pyhsics lecture note under this page and since they are all general physics lecture notes, i use the same keyword for every general pyhsics lecture note i post. Every post is a lecture note, every lecture note for the same lecture has the same keyword.

Before last google update everything was fine and i ranked #1 or #2 for all my keywords. Now even though i haven't changed the system i share notes, i am struggling to rank. The competition in my area is not high and some very shitty sites rank before me, even though they haven't been active lately.

I don't have too much knowledge about this part of SEO, but i thought of something: instead of having "general pyhsics lecture notes" keyword for every lecture note i have, i am thinking of preparing a single page for every keyword, than share the actual lecture notes with other, plausible long-tail keywords. So "general pyhsics lecture notes" keyword would lead the visitors to a single page, a "homepage" for that particular lecture and they can find the list of lecture notes on that page.

What say you? I know competing pages for a keyword is bad, but is it this bad? What are my options in a case like mine, where i have to have posts with same keywords?

Thank you all!

Google Has De-Indexed My Blog- How do I get it back?

Hello! I wrote a blog about a month ago that’s been bringing in a consistent flow of a few hundred visitors. Unfortunately, a few days ago I noticed that I haven’t gotten any visitors from that blog. I typed in the page URL/blog title on google and it’s nowhere to be found.

I did change the URL on it around that same time (just shortened it). I created a URL redirect but now it’s gone completely. Not sure if that had anything to do with it. I don’t have any errors on my site so no broken links or anything.

Wondering if anyone can help? Not sure what to do or how to bring it back. I was the second result on the first page of google for that keyword :(

SEO for OOS (Hidden) items

Hey guys - I'm a some-what beginner in SEO.

I'm using Bigcommerce and there's an option to "Hide all OOS products but have the page still accessible".

I turned this on because 80% of my products are sold out and the store looks messy for the customer to sort through while trying to buy In-Stock items. There's no filtering function for this theme for OOS.

That said, I wanted to HIDE all the OOS products from the site so it's a better experience for the customer. Then I want to make a page listing all our products (ie. 150 SKUs) with hyperlinks to all of them for google to crawl.

Is this a good idea?

SEO suffering from google ads stuffing?

So I rank number 1 for tutoring keywords in all the major cities my site gets over 1 million worth traffic a year. But the last year very little leads have been coming from my SEO efforts as I’m still number 1 on all the big cities but today I check tutor in New York City the search results has 4 ads at the top, 2 ads in the 3 pack, plus another 4ads at the bottom with only 5 organic search results on the first page.... this is getting crazy that google is pretty much drowning out the people that earned the results for those that can afford 25k a month in ads.

SEO Keyword Help

Hi all,

I'm new to SEO so I expect to get roasted haha but I've been reading articles and YouTube videos lately but still am a bit confused.

I'm working on a travel blog (I know another one of the millions). I focus on outdoor and adventure travel.

My few posts I have are full guides to national parks (~2.5k words per post)

My trouble with keywords is obviously Yellowstone national park guide is going to be difficult to compete with. Should I go for longer keywords or try focusing on specific resources in my blog like best hotels I. The area.

Thanks in advance.

"the Art of SEO" by Eric Enge - up to date? Worth it?

Was wondering if anyone knows the book "the Art of SEO" by Eric Enge... right now, the latest edition I can find is 3rd... From 2015.

Has anyone read or have any info about it? Is the info in it still worth it?

I know the basics may very well still hold out, but some things might have changed (even going from white hat to black hat).

So, is the book still worth it? Have you found it useful?

(I expect most will say "research the info online", but I work better having a sort of physical guide to highlight, tab and all that stuff)

Making backlink building easier

A friend and I are currently working on a new platform where users get link swap proposals based on their sites' niches and SEO stats. We are at MVP-stage and looking for people who want to try it out and give feedback. And this might be just the right place to speak with people who care about such things!

The backstory:

If you are a crafty marketer, you will have sent or seen any of the following:

  • A cold email asking for an article to be linked
  • "I have a DR 65 in the [niche]. Hit me up if you want to collaborate."
  • "I will get you high-quality backlinks. No PBN. $50 per DR 50."

When we discovered this SEO part, we immediately thought "this sucks." It is tedious and annoying – and time-consuming. And it burns social capital, not to mention email deliverability.

How it works:

We thought that there would be a much more efficient way to accomplish the same by matching people that (1) want to collaborate, and (2) have sites that fit well together.

Our platform automates the process by taking into account various factors that people generally look for when swapping links: Domain rating/authority, traffic, niche, spam score. Our system matches sites with those that have the highest fit based on all of these factors.

Where we are:

We don't have a frontend yet since we are still in the process of validating our initial assumptions. The core functionality ("You got a match!") is delivered via email. The service is free for anyone to use since we did not want to worry about payments and all the other annoying business stuff until we have a reliable product in place.

If our assumptions hold, we will gradually expand and add more in-app functionality such as chat, link tracking, and possibly a marketplace – depending on what users need!

How much would I realistically be looking at paying for linkbuilding?

I want to build a new website up to DR 30-40, how much would it cost typically? The competitors in my niche are around that level so if I want to compete, I need to get around there.

It's not in a super competitive niche either so I would imagine links would cost less.

I used to be against buying links, but it just makes sense to do it vs spending time doing massive outreach and getting nowhere when they're only going to ask for money in the end anyway.

Edit: Another question as well, are site owners asking for money AND a guest post or when you pay they will do a niche edit for you?

Reddit never appears positioned in Google, it is the antithesis of SEO

My first language is Spanish, I work with websites and spend most of the day browsing. I remember when Yahoo Answers was in the first places, I saw it all the time, now it has been several approximately 3 years that I do not see it in the results, all because Google changed its code. If so, what about reddit? I never see it in Google results but it is an active community, the content is public (not like facebook) why does it not appear in the results. NEVER NEVER NEVER!!! I see Reddit appear, exception if I type site: reddit.com or the word reddit. However reddit grows. What is the attitude I have to take regarding reddit and Google, what is the best?

How will Google react to this?

I look for updates of the industry among the web every day. It's not that convenient to find such niche news. Hope my website will help other industry professionals to get information easier. All of my blog posts are "Alternate page with proper canonical tag" in Search Console

Hi!

I have written daily blog posts (about 20 posts) to my blog and just noticed that mostly all of them are marked as "Alternate page with proper canonical tag" In Search Console and Google has excluded them. I have only two pages marked as "Valid" in SC.

I didn't quite understand the explanation "Google didn’t index this page because it has a canonical tag pointing to a different URL.". I have used tags on my blog posts, so is that the problem?

Could this be some sort of conflict in Wordpress plugins? I am using Yoast SEO. It has setting that enable showing categories and tags in search results. Should I disable those?

I some help understanding backlinks...

I mean, I know what backlinks are. I have been doing this for over 10 years. I just don't get them!

Say you build a new website - no one will know you right? You won't rank in Google because you don't have a strong enough backlink profile. But you need people to naturally link to because of your 'great quality' articles. How will this happen unless by some miracle your post about grandmas cookies go viral on social.

Sure you can buy backlinks or you can hunt them out searching for 'best cookie recipe blogs" link exchange or some such nonsense in the hope you may (or may not) get a backlink.

This is hardly natural is it?

Am I missing something? Does Google have us in a chicken and egg situation? Should we be buying backlinks?

Will people naturally link to by post about cookies made from yesterdays pizza?

What's the deal?

WP Astra Theme and Rankings

Just wanted to check in and see if anyone else was having any issues with WP astra ?

I've had two completly different websites both built using WP Astra theme completly drop of the serps only to re appear and drop off again

these two websites are now ranking and only showing up for the main keyword set out in h1, none of the other keywords are appearing the in the serps and if they do, they appear breifly and then disappear again. (not highly competitive words)

Both sites have great backlinks profiles, but for some reason the google bot isn't liking these pages at all.

Blog posts are doing great! they rank high and convert regularly.

I moved one of these sites off the wp astra theme over the genisis theme and viola it started ranking again.

Before we say schema or anything on page is the issue, I mimicked the top ranking sites in both niches in terms of schema.

Break up your content in short one or two liners...

Depending on the content topic this makes it easier for the reader and will lead to more dwell time.

Removing a google books keyword search from google search

Hi,

Google indexed the worst page it could from a collaboration I did years ago on a book.

The google books page links to a biography is all wrong and I look like a chump (was in the uni at a time).

The publisher isn't responding because of the holidays.

What can I do to get a google books keyword search from google search removed?

Thanks.

Moving some of the articles from SITE A to SITE B and implementing 301 redirect -- SEO Effect

Hi there,

(I've also posted this on r/bigSEO, and I'm hoping to get some advice)

I hope y'all are doing great. So, I recently purchased an expired domain (let's call it "site B"). This domain has great backlinks and it is in the same niche as the other website that I own (let's call it "site A").

Now, site A has some great content which I think would perform better on site B. And I want to delete this content from site A and publish it on site B and then implement 301 redirects.

My question is: can I move some of the articles from site A to site B and implement 301 redirects? If I do that, will it impact the sites negatively? I want both the sites to have a separate identity, but I also don't want to lose any link juice.

I'm confused because 301 redirects mean a permanent move. Is it normal for sites to permanently move some of their content to the new URLs?

I'm not sure how Google will handle this. If I was moving all the articles to site B, then it would have been simple. Because in that case, we would be telling Google that we're moving permanently from here. But since this will only be a couple of URLs, how do you think it would pan out?

And do you think it's a good idea?

Any advice is appreciated!

Thanks

However once i've created them, What do I do with it? I don't have the funds to advertise. Then I thought of something.. I love how YouTube lets creators start with nothing and grow a business.

What SEO service/tool should we subscribe to you?

Hi!

I'm a marketing team of one at a start-up that's been around for 3 years. I have some experience in SEO, but not a lot on the execution side. My goal with SEO right now is to continue learning, and begin working on small projects on technical and non-technical seo. I have never used an SEO suite such as SEMrush and think these would be a good investment for now and was wondering if anyone can make a recommendation on which one to use or what type of questions I should be thinking about as I look to choose one. Should I be concerned? (Core update)

Hey all! I am still experiencing a daily net loss of keywords that is seemingly related to the core update that just rolled out. Looking at my site on SEMrush, I've lost 16% of my keywords over the past month -- however, I've been looking at the lost keywords day-by-day, and they all seem to low-volume keywords that were ranking on like page 7 (the point: they weren't driving traffic for me anyway).

I am used to seeing our total keywords go up on a daily basis, so I guess my concern is that this has been roughly 30 straight days of losses, despite the update finishing its rollout over a week ago.

Just looking for any feedback! Thanks so much.

Wordpress : What type of permalink URL structure is best for Pages and Posts for SEO?

Greetings,I've been wondering about the permalink URL structure on sites and have read various articles about it. So far I've concluded the following for posts :

  • Category + Postname
  • Postname only

But, I see on some more advances sites that literally all links are of this structure :

  • domain.xyz / title-of-site

This includes all menu items, even sub-items within the navigation. How do you change those in wordpress since wordpress automatically adds the parent-item into the URL of the menu sub-item?

Is there any benefit from this, other then creating a shorter URL? Wouldn't the parent-item, or the category name, help in SEO purposes if it represents a keyword? Wouldn't a hierarchy help crawlers to have a better insight into the entire site?

Or is it really better to have absolutely no categories in links, not even parent-item / sub-item relationship in menu URL links?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

ecomm SEO + categories?

I'm helping a friend optimize her ecomm site but ecomm isn't something I'm terribly familiar with (I do more content SEO), so I wanted to get some input before I make any suggestions to her. As an FYI, she sells candles, diffusers and soap.

The part I'm stuck at is her category pages. Let's take candles, for example. Right now, her category URL to view all of her candles is www[dot]herwebsite[dot]com/shop?category=Candles. This is the link she uses in the nav bar to link to her candles.

Would you change that to something like www[dot]herwebsite[dot]com/shop/candles, or is the first URL fine for SEO purposes?

Edit: had to add [dot] in order to post my question, the above URL is just an example and isn't her actual website..

Effect on SEO: Want to move content (blog posts) only to new WP installation with a new theme and new plugins

Another migration question, but a bit different.

The only thing I want to migrate is my content and schema, structured data, meta data, urls etc so I can maintain my SEO presence.

I want to completely redo the theme from the ground up and use a new plugin stack. I was previously using a bunch of crappy free plugins but now will use Astra Pro.

So basically I'm starting a new site but using the same content.

Can I just start a separate WP installation from scratch. Build a theme. Then copy paste over the content (essentially making new content) and then remove the domain from the old wp and assign it to the new wp? And then keep the url structure?

Or will that destroy my SEO?

Frase VS Postpace and Copysmith? Content Writing tool

Things are heating up in my business and I've managed to train up some really talented content writers and copywriters at low cost.

I'm thinking of getting some of these tools to speed up their writing.

I see that frase and postpace are more of a seo content writing tool. Has anyone used them? Frase is a lot cheaper while postpace seems really expensive but I heard its better.

I've also gotten a bunch of copywriting tools like automatic script and leadscripts which are really helping out my copywriter. She went from not knowing anything about copywriting to be able to write a pretty decent sales letter that I could use them for my funnels. I know this isn't a copywriting sub but I think you could also use copysmith for content writing as well so I'm asking in here.

I'm thinking of adding copysmith into the process. Automatic script gives a templated sales letter, while lead scripts gives you good lines to insert within the sales letter. And I think copysmith will cover the in betweens that the other tools don't.

Anyway my main question is more about frase vs postpace. I hope I can get some insights.

Do visits from other countries make a difference?

Hi. I have a site that has 90% traffic from Argentina. I was about to hire a fellow that could grant me several organic visits using a keyword (Thing that I really need to kickstart my page out of the slump that it fell during the pandemics) The thing is that given that 90% was Argentinian, I don't know how much would it affect it if it wasn't from Argentina or near countries. SEO named #1 hard skill for marketers?!

Microsoft named SEO as the most valuable hard skill for marketers in a recent study (the report can be found by searching in google “2020 vision: trends to define next decade”). Obviously Microsoft doesn’t represent everyone, but they’re also not a nobody. Meaning it’s a relatively big statement that raised a few questions.

Specifically, if SEO is so valuable then wouldn’t high compensation naturally follow? After being in SEO a few years, I wouldn’t exactly say it’s a notoriously high paying field. This made me wonder if I’m overlooking high earning SEO roles or related roles that utilize these skills. The only SEO careers on my radar are SEO specialist and SEO manager - which might be too narrow of a scope.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

How AI and ML Form Technologies of the Future

Today, with the expansion of volumes and complexity of data, AI and ML are used for its processing and analysis. To be fair, the human brain can analyze large amounts of data, but this ability is limited by the volume of data it can absorb at any moment. Artificial intelligence is free from this limitation. More accurate predictions and insights delivered by AI improve business efficiency, lower production cost and increase productivity. No wonder that many industries apply AI and ML to improve performance and propel the product development.

Flooded with nofollows overnight

(Disclaimer: I'm not a SEO professional, just a business owner lil lady please be kind).

I had a SEO freelancer do my backlink profile, and the quality of links seems actually good.

Now, here comes the problem - yesterday I commented on a gardening blog and included my website in my info. I woke up to 1k nofollows from that one blog comment. It keeps growing. Apparently the feature the "latest" comments in each and every article they ever wrote. The blog has a good DA and it's related to my work field.... but I'm concerned about these nofollows affecting my dofollow rate, my spam score or whatever... should I disavow to Google or it will just be irrelevant?

Purpose of websites with randomly generated content?

I'm assuming its a blackhat SEO trick to gather more clicks, but is that their only purpose? And why?

I've noticed various searches (usually specific topics that don't have many legitimate results) return sites that are filled with garbage, they're literally just randomly generated paragraphs in Wordpress. These sites don't seem to be used to propogate malware or for phishing, the domains are completely random and probably don't hold much value, they don't host any ads, and they don't have any linkbacks. And yet there are tons of them, so people are clearly spending money on them for some reason.

Anyone here know what they are being used for?

Why would referring domains spike wildly from 60k to 6k and back multiple times this year??

Edit: post was removed for Image link I think, but title describes issue

Second edit: referring pages, not domains. Referring domains is a steady incline, pages are spiked.

Apologies if this is a silly Q, new to this forum - or please direct me to a better place to ask!- SEO is not really the main facet of my job but something my job touches upon -

does anyone know why this dramatic spiking keeps happening in referring URLS?? I thought maybe it was just a reflection of Google updates, but I took a look at some similar-sized competitors and they do not seem to have this.

It's confusing to me b/c I would otherwise think it was due to some sort of link farming/getting cracked down cycle, but we're not doing anything like that. It just keeps bouncing from 60k to 6k, like 4 times this past year.

Relevant info: we're constantly making changes to the website, but nothing major that I know of that would line up with this. I've also been creating content for the site pretty consistently, haven't been deleting anything. Small company, domain rank a little over 2mil. Source of data is Ahrefs.

Rate my niche idea.

TLDR: want to start a blog niche resource guide where I source the information from social media and Forum comment threads. — Working on a pet niche site of about 50,000 monthly searches for the top keyword and about 3500 related keywords.

My idea comes from observing very involved social media communities always re-asking the same questions and tons of involvement and discussion on those questions every time. Seems like a great opportunity for writing hyper focused articles on these topics.

I’m not looking to break the bank so my question isn’t as much about massive profitability as it is about the information source. I wanted to analyze these large comment threads and break them down into informational articles. A similar niche article example might be “should I cut my cats claws”

My feeling was that since I see the same questions asked over and over again, I could see this passion a community really doing a deep dive into these hyper focused articles and potential he purchasing accessories off of my links or even some ad revenue.

I see a lot of passionate commenting from people who really sound like they know their stuff but equal arguments from another side. My approach was going to be to show all the different sides of the story that got presented in those comment threads.

nOOb question about keywords

Hello guys :) BASIC question for you experts out there!

I’m running a small and very young news website. We don’t sell anything and don’t run ads. I have a website page (a “real” page, not a category archive page) with a few posts (4, aiming to reach 8-10 in a few weeks), all assigned to the same subcategory, that constitute some sort of guide/manual about a broad topic.

I am now going to write an introduction post to this guide with also links to all the other posts and a sentence or two describing the contents and the logic behind the topics chosen (why they matter). Something a bit promotional, so to say.

However I’m a bit preoccupied because of SEO aspects, I fear that these two pages might compete against each other and end up acting as reciprocal vampires.

Considering that the page does not have many space of movement since it’s just a grid of blog posts with excerpts....whilst the post of course has full freedom of action...how to optimise keywords? What would you do in my place? To avoid errors and rank in the best possible place?

I’d like to have both or at least one of them ranking for the term “guide to X Y” 🤔

Thank you for your help and advice!

Thoughts on 'near me' in the domain name for higher rankings?

What are your thoughts on 'near me' in the domain name for SEO?

Will it work in 2021? Can it work well in different countries (i.e pizzanearme co uk)?

As you know, google gets high volume 'near me' searches every month and I have read some success stories on people capitalising on this by having an exact match domain. This was a couple of years ago, so I am not sure if this method would work today.

'near me' Dot com is probably oversaturated but maybe there is an opportunity to look into different tlds such as UK based domains

What are your thoughts?

What do the search results for site:yoursite.com tell us?

So I typed in site:mysite.com into google and got my results. Do these tell us anything? I mean some of the pages that came up on the first page were like blog category pages - not my preference. WOuld prefer some other pages.

These results don't seem to be based entirely on links. I don't quite get it.

Pagespeed Insights and On Page SEO Audit. What is the going rate now a days?

We recently revamped our website and need to get a few issues resolved according to Google Pagespeed Insights. I have contacted a few local firms but I'm not sold and think they are just going to outsource it on freelancer. I could do that easily enough but I don't want someone who is just going to run the cookie cutter fixes and possibly tweak code that shouldn't be tweaked. Yes,

I know there are apps and shit that can do a lot of this for me but would rather leave it to someone who knows what they're doing and can articulate to me WHY they are doing it.

PageSpeed Insights: Mobile = 17, Desktop = 81

What is the going rate to get my issues fixed as well as an on page SEO Audit and help with getting those issues resolved?

Product description

have more than 3000 product in my Shopify store already and every product description is supplier copied and maybe Google sees them as a duplicated content which has been used elsewhere.

Does that mean, I have to re-write each and every bit of product description which is almost impossible? If I do not change them, does that mean that my site is likely to get ranked even though I have improved on other bits like collection content, blogs etc. Let me know your thoughts that how should I approach this issue. Thanks

Interesting observation about my content

I have an aged site good good DA. I've been trying to prepare content for a different but related niche.

I have one article in particular that i'm really proud of. Content is exceptional, original, useful. Notably better than all competition in the top 10 for the prime keyword.

It's been up since early December and I am just watching how it's ranking for more and more keywords every day. It's interesting because there is one very specific keyword on this topic that I would love to rank for, but I can't. It's even listed in the title.

I suspect google is evaluating my site in some capacity and allowing me to rank for low traffic keywords but is blocking me from the juicy ones. I suspect they are evaluating my site on some random metrics, could be anything, and determining that I'm not good enough to blow-up in traffic just yet. It simply doesn't make sense how I am ranking for all sorts of vaguely related crap, in the top 10, but not for the one that my article is literally about.

How do i go about hiring an SEO manager?

Hello! I’m new to SEO, and am learning but i am starting a business an was considering hiring someone to manage SEO. I see lots of offers on upwork and other freelancing websites, as well as searched local companies.

I’ve heard a few pitches but not one really mentioned how they would be optimizing. I understand the reasoning thinking i might just take their strategy in and try doing it myself, or hiring someone else to execute it, but i just don’t feel like i have enough information to confidently hire someone.

What should i be looking for when hiring for SEO?

How to get product listings on a third party site indexed by Google?

I have a shop on redbubble with products. If I search in images for "morocco doorway <shopname> site:redbubble.com", google returns 22 results, none of which are mine. It appears it hasn't indexed them. However, I do the same with another third party site, society6 and I do get my products.

Any ideas on what governs whether google indexes a product listing? And ideas on how to improve that?

Ideas I've had

- Links from pinterest may force google to index?

- Links from my own website may force google to index?

Anything cleverer I'm not thinking about? Any other way redbubble could be sandboxing or otherwise indicating to google not to index certain things?

What are you struggling with as a beginner in SEO?

First off, massive props to anyone working on learning new things and starting their own sites. It's a struggle but it's worth it!

We are all beginners at some point, and I could talk about SEO all day, so I'm happy to help out when I can.

I see lots of beginners asking questions about their sites, which is great. There are no stupid questions, only stupid answers :)

So... what are your main pain points when starting out? What's confusing to you? What are you struggling with?

I'll provide as much insight as I can and invite the other vets to chime in as well...

How do I Determine how much to invest in content

I have a few websites I'm starting up soon and I understand how important good content is. One site is a construction business and the other is a business listing directory in a niche. Looking at the content writing companies, it seems like it'd cost around $60 per article on the niche topics such as how to choose the right contractor or diy stuff etc. I know that 1 article isn't enough, so ill need dozens of articles on each site, and I read that it can take up to 4 to 6 months to get the benefits from the content and get better rankings.

At that rate, if I paid for 12 articles of content per site per month at $60 per article and it takes 6 months to get good rankings, it would cost nearly $10k and I see that decent new sites are generating $500 a month, it would take 20 months to recoup the content investment.

What kind of formula can I use to guide on how much to pay for content, what strategies do you all use for investing in content for new websites?

Thanks
