Inflated Website pageviews, hits, impressions?

Hello, I'm super confused and wondered if you guys could help. I used to work for a b2b company, and I left last year. Another company took the website and redid the website. Yesterday I was called to see what's going with the site and do an audit (because that company did an awful job). Since I'm cool with the owner, I agreed to come in. I found the site has appalling keyword optimisations and that the website doesn't rank well for anything the business offers (it's a b2b company). But what confused me was that the site was getting a lot of page hits and a lot of search impressions. What made the whole situation even more confusing was that we used a lead generation, and it barely showed any businesses that came to the site. To give a brief idea of what I saw: 300,000 page hits in March, 600,000 page hits in April which then dropped to 30,000 in may which then dropped to 25,000 in June. 2-3 business going on the site every day (usually from LinkedIn) 35K impressions on Search Console in the last three months, with the business name getting the most impressions at 2k with 200-ish clicks. The next highest search query was a blog I wrote that got 1k impressions and 100 hits - from there it's impressions that have less than 100

My questions can businesses inflate a site's performance? Can that affect SEO? And is there anything else I can check to see WTF is going on, on the site?

Is there any advice I should offer to the client as I have never seen this before.

Thank you!
