Need Expert SEO Advise. RUIN or SUCCESS.

I'm currently in a bit of a pickle. We've been very reliant on key landing pages where a couple, account for about 30% of our traffic! My boss is very concerned that if we change something we could lose our position. Problem is, we are slowly getting outranked.

I was hoping to convince my boss that we need a radical change to make google notice us but, I need convincing as much as he does.

One of our key landing pages is a main category page with no sub-categories. This is focusing on the residential and commercial customer through our SEO. This page also shows products relating to both demographics which I know makes SEO focused keywords for both demographics/audience very difficult.

I believe, if we were to split the main category page we could open our doors to more organic search terms, essentially having 3 pages focusing on getting our audience in for the correct key areas rather than the one that we've been so heavily reliant on for years. Not to mention I think it would make our website appear more content-rich to google?

We have a new product coming in that is very clearly for residential and I was hoping I could split these products apart with new pages. Our products are very similar, it's just that one is better suited for commercial. So subtle keyword changes would be, for example, home workshop and commercial workshop represented in their separate sub-categories (new landing pages) with the correct product.

I guess my question is, would something like this leave us in ruin or would we be pleasantly surprised how much google favours a website that clearly has a bit more content? It sounds like a ridiculous question but my boss won't budge and I'm in fear we are stuck with main categories, one level, one tier website for the rest of our lives. Surely I have to take the risk and evolve the website where pages represent landing pages that will suit all our audiences that search for the right keywords?

Where to start? I need help/advice or a platform that can help me. Anyone?

Thanks
