If you're like me - you have viewed guest blogs as a means for the backlink and quality is a bit on the backburner. Of course we all know that writing good guest blog content will get you further with your SEO, but I recently discovered that having the same laser-focus on SEO and quality for a guest blog as you would on your own website can get you very far.

Strategy - Rank your money keyword on someone else's website

Method

• Find a killer guest blog opportunity (this is the most important and difficult step). The website should have lots of quality organic traffic and ranking keywords in your niche
• Determine your money keyword and spin it into an informational article. For example, if my money kw is "event rentals" my article could be "10 event rental ideas"
• Write a killer article with a hyper focus on SEO of your money keyword
• Brand the article as much as the blogging site will allow
  • get your one link in
  • image by [brand name]
  • include brand name without backlinks
  • include brand watermark in images
  • etc
• Send the article to the guest blogger site, and give them the SEO information. tell them your target KW, suggested meta info/image alts/etc.
• if you want to get super crazy, you can even build up tier 2 backlinks to your guest blog

Benefits

• Piggy back off the domain authority and rankability of someone else's website - your site might not be powerful enough to rank your money keyword at the #1 spot, but theirs may be
• Fill an EXTRA serp spot. Say you're ranked #2 - if you can get your guest blog to #1 then you are essentially ranked #1 and #2
• move your competitors down another SERP spot
• Branding
• Referral traffic
• Helps out the guest blog site by getting them a ton of organic traffic and they will want to work with you more, maybe even give you a deal on future articles or websites

My Results

I was #2 nationally for the longest time. Now my guest blog is ranked #1 and I am still #2. The guest blog contains many images, all branded with our logo. There are also several brand mentions in the article with a do follow link
