TL:DR: Built a new website for 1st client (trusting friend), using SEO knowledge I've gathered, and now they're main keywords SERP went from 2 to 8. Did I destroy their business?
Lengthy Details:
After being a reader here and SEO blogs for years, I finally convinced myself I was capable of switching career paths. A friend who runs a local business threw me a bone and let me build them a new website. The site turned out great and they love it, but unfortunately, since I've launched it, they are losing ranking FAST. Their primary keywords went from Local Pack 3, to 8.
Now I'm sitting here thinking I ruined their business they've run for over a decade with dozens of employees.
Time Frame:
Site Launch: Feb 9
Rank Drop: Feb 14
Gradually declining since Feb 14
What I've Done:
I built the new site in Wordpress using all of the major suggestions commonly offered here. It's hosted on Kinsta and uses The SEO Framework plugin.
I kept the same Title, Description, and H1 for the homepage and service pages. Some of the copy from the old site was brought over, but additional copy and images were added.
I thought I did everything better.
- Title, Descrip, and H1 for all pages with keywords
- Alt tags on all images
- Faster site load speeds
- Same URL permalinks
SEMRush: Site audit gives it at 93% and most SEO audit tools give it 90%+.
Ahrefs: I subbed this in an effort to hopefully find missing backlinks, but I couldn't find any, but I'm not an expert in it. I did submit about 15 links to de-index that may have been spammy.
Google Search Console: Says all my Schema is great and there are no longer page errors or any problems listed in here at all.
At this point, I'm willing to pay my own money for someone to help me find out where I went wrong so I don't make others lose their jobs. Maybe there is something I missed that I keep overlooking? Help!
