Question for all of you SEO Wizards.

Not in your field (retired guy with too much time on my hands) but very curious about it. Have explored Ahrefs and Buzzsumo and Semrush and Moz and read a couple of books on the topic. All in an effort to at least gain a basic understanding of SEO from a writer’s perspective.

So, here’s my question. If you’re really good at SEO and can get a particular website to rank in the top 10 of Google for a category, why not do it for yourself instead of for a client?

For example, take a category like Roofing or Plumbing or Swimming Pool Contractor or Widget Manufacturer. Build the most SEO-Friendly site possible, including killer content and the appropriate backlinks, and the 200 other ranking factors Google is said to use. Own the URL yourself, and the corresponding social media accounts.

Then collect all the traffic for yourself and build an email list. Then sell the leads (or the entire site) to someone in those industries for big bucks.

I’ve read so much about your struggles with terrible clients with unreasonable expectations and impossible demands, and then bickering over your fees. Seems if you guys can really build sites that dominate the traffic, you’re in the driver’s seat, and the clients should be kissing your behinds.

Why aren’t they?
