I'm a VERY small business owner who is getting asked to add do-follow links. What are the pros and cons of this?

I'm very new to SEO and still learning. I'm getting asked to place links in existing articles as well as create new articles with links to websites. Looking for some advice, explain like i'm 5, etc.!
