Is disavowing bad links a good idea?

Hey all,

I run a news site, many years ago while I was starting I bought one bad package of "backlinks". They are crap obviously. I want to clean them up, but a few articles I'm reading are saying that I shouldn't worry about it and just ignore it. What's your take?
