Keyword variations - how do I tackle it?

Hi guys

I'm trying to optimize a page i run for search engines. We have identified a list of keywords that we're going to use on the site, and for an Ads-campaign.

Some of the keywords with most impressions ("Short tail" i believe is the term), are keywords like:

  • "Food birthday"
  • "Menu birthday"

We want to target these keywords, but it's not easy to write "Food birthday". Typically we would write "Food for your birthday", "A tasty menu for a birthday" or something similar, where we use filler-words.

How does this work? Is it considered a totally new keyword when you put simple words in between the exact match search-phrase?
