I run an ecommerce store that sells cameras. Let's use a Nikon Z7 as an example of my issue:
- There is a landing page for the Nikon Z7 that contains more than one Nikon Z7 (you can buy the Z7 with a lens or without, making it two separate products and SKUs)
- There is also a product page for the Nikon Z7 (there are more than one product pages for the reason above).
When someone searches for the Z7, the landing page and the product page are competing against each other. What would be the best approach to resolve this, to de-index one page or would the canonical tag work in this situation?
On a similar note, my manager has the opinion that landing pages are favoured more than product pages by Google. This means that even if there is only one SKU available for a camera model (it is only available without a lens for example), then he wants a landing page for that model.
I think this goes against what Google wants as if someone wants to buy the camera then they have to click through to another page to buy, rather than landing immediately on the product page and checking out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
