Looking at ahrefs, one of our competitors had a massive spike in backlinks over the past 3 months. Somewhere around 5 million. The devil's share are coming from two websites, both forums with a large number of URLs. In both instances, our competitor has purchased these links. One is a handful of links in the footer of every page on the site. The other is a small image in a logo farm that's on every page.
Unfortunately, this is has been a boon for our competitor. I know you're not supposed to "purchase" backlinks, but if this is a success for them I'm going to feel pressured to do something similar.
Any suggestions for how I should proceed, or should I just wait for Google to organically understand that these links are unnatural?
