how to redirect a bought domain to capture traffic & domain authority?

Hi,

i recently bought a domain which has reasonable domain authority, decent content and traffic.

My plan is to create new content based on the old one, combine posts as some of them are rather short and then 301 forward the old urls to the new ones.

I am having some questions on some specifics

Do I first redirect the old domain to the new one old-tld/* -> existing-tld) and then add some redirects on the WP installation of the existing domain to redirect the posts (existing-tld/old_path_from_oldxyz -> existing-tld/new_path)?

Or do I first redirect the posts and then the generic?

old-xyz/old_path_from_oldxyz -> existing-xyz/new_path
old-xyz/* - existing-xyz/dedicated-starting-page-for-xyz.old

Also, is there any way I can measure the traffic via GA which comes from the 301 redirect?
